Just wondered if there were any gains from them apart from maybe de-airing the water system more easierly?
I wana go standardish looking engine bay, and also dont like the fact you cant see the water moving or your level with the bailey tanks, and i need a bailey tank to run feed for the swirl pot...
so can i get rid?!?! lol
just wondered your views lads...

I don't know if they are worth it or just a fancy item to tart up a bay - i bought one that was rough - blasted it and painted Matt black
Got it for pence for it and would say thats the only reason i bought one - put it this way i wouldn't pay £100 for what they are.

Anything to help the water system out, though I'm unsure if it's the best way as some water aswell as air is then returned to the tank and doesn't make it to the radiator for efficient cooling. Anymore thoughts on this?

all i can see it doing is sending cold water and what bubbles you have to the header tank, but the header tank would be a better way of de-airing as it's higher and the bubbles will go to the highest point?
You've got it the wrong way around, the flow goes from bottom to top engine wise, ie opposite to the radiator where it enters at the top and goes down.
They are used primarily on very heavy boosted cars that develop hot spots in the water around the cylinder/jackets, this cases air to form, but so long as the return from the highest point is working ok, ie from the turbo this will return any air to the tank, so not really needed imo.
I think on the vast majority they are a gimmick, I would never have a metal tank of any make, as like yourself I like to see my level, don't try plastic welding the tank with another fitting, if you wanted to you can always "T" into the turbo return line with no problems.

If they are worth it or not, I dont know..
But my RS500 had one fitted back in the 80´s
(when it was given a light touring car setup)!
It has to be good for something?
Good or not, I have it on all my Cosworth´s...
