Hello Chaps
I'm pretty sure the rack on the cossie is knackered, I get the occasional clonk and it is easy to turn at some points and difficult at others. Think it may be damaged or bent internally.
A couple of questions :
Where is the best place to buy a rack from? I have seen a company on Ebay doing exchange racks for about £175. I have also seen that Graham Goode does them for about £200???
How easy are they to replace, I had a look the other night and it seems very straight forward, remove coupling, remove 2 mounting bolts and it looks like it pulls out from the front? Just a couple of track rod ends and pipes as well? Is it as easy as it looks?
Cheers in advance

If you can gain access to the intermidiate shaft and rack main bolts then it's easy. If not it can be a nightmare.
Remove both wheels.
Undo both track rod ends.
Undo intermidiate shaft from the coupling near the bulkhead.
Remove both rack bolts through the cross memberUndo the one 10mm bolt which will allow both th feed and return pipe to come free, remembering to collect as muh of thebleaked fluid into a container as possible. It makes a mess so you have been warned.
Label the pipes as to where they go as they can be easily mixed up.
You may also have to undo some little diddly plastic screw pipe holders.
Pull the passenger side of the rack towards you.
Holding the rack, twist it along it's length to get the steerig knuckle to clear the little hollow just below on the cross member.
Remove rack.
If this doesn't do the trcik you will have to remove the rack end of the intermidiate shaft which, let's just say, can be a little hard to reach.
The intermidiate shaft has a little cutout on it so it will only go back on one way, and if you can't get the rack out with it in place you won't get the rack back in with it in place and welcometo the world of fiddling about blindly trying to line shit up

Hello Chaps
Yep, I think it was in Cornwall. I've been watching it for ages but hadn't got round to dragging the motor out of the garage to condemn the old one.
I just checked Ebay and they don't appear to be on there anymore???
Have you got there details???
Cheers

Hello Chaps
Thanks for the responses, car is currently in the body shop having the small hole looked at and some minor paint repairs.
Hopefully will have it back in a week or 2, as soon as i've got a return date i'll give them a call and get one ordered.
I'll let you know how I get on.
Cheers

Did this two nights ago on my 4x4 saph which incidentally is the same as escos. Pretty much as Dojj said apart from labelling the pipes, it shuld be obvious which one goes where, and the pipes that go into the rack are different sizes so can't physically fit the other way round.
Once you get the car jacked up and at a good place to start it can be done pretty quick, fluid is a messy affair though, but epends how careful you want to be.
Also, if you replace the rack i'd replace the track rod ends aswell for the cost of it, so to save time i'd just hacksaw through them instead of fucking around with mole grips and the nyloc nut.
Also when you disconnect the steering couopling do it from the bulkhead side, not at the rack, you'll never manage that, I bet you any money.

Hello
Phoned the steering rack people a couple of days ago, very friendly and helpful. Ordered a new rack complete with everything including uprated bushes for £165 +15 Delivery. Should be arriving today. Just got to wait for the car to return from the bodyshop and then get it fitted!
Cheers
