Default steering column repair

hey peoples

got up and down play in my steering solumn
noticed a plastic grey round bearing thingy breaking up and falling into footwell.
ive bought a column repair kit which consists of 2 grey plastic rings.
they go at the bottom of the column, just by the mount i think.

if you understand what the hell im on about,
how easy is it to fit them?
do i have to remove column and fit from top or bottom or what?

cheers chaps
steve

Repaired mine about a month ago or so. It`s not very difficult. You have to take out from the car the column. Once you have it out you have to take out the internal shaft. Once the shaft is out you change the two plastic bearings with care to put in the same position as the old ones. The upper plastic bearing has a locating tab in one side that engages in the external bar of the column.Put a little grease between the new bearings.
With all mounted refit the column to the car and you are done.

Cheers mate , just where it mounts, think i am missing a washer for one of the two lugs that locate the column on the bulk head bracket....

As above, they come apart pretty easily, i bought a kit and replaced all the bushes in the column whilst it was out the car as i had lots of movement.

Would it be possible to do the repair without seperating the column from the rack? Does the outer tube slide up and off the shaft once the steering wheel is removed?

easy to do, just make sure its lined up before you tighten the steering wheel, or you will squash the plastic bearings

you have to slide outer column up and off the inner column, its the only way as you have to slide bearings over and back down .
when you re-assemble,theres a plastic tag on the upper bearing that locates in a slot.
hold it in place whilst you gently tighten steering wheel lock nut.
be carefull and make sure its alligned.
very easy job once you start mate

But surely you dont need to seperate it from the Rack? From what I can see the outer black tube slides off the inner column.
