We have used Photobucket for years, but only to upload pics and link to them on other forums. Now I have some photos I would like to upload so that I can send them to people in Galleries.
For example, our Wedding pics, I'd like to upload all 400 odd of them, then give someone the ability to view them as a nice slideshow. Perhaps adding text/comments etc? and also further folders of holiday pics etc.
I'm not sure if Photobucket is the best option for this? Flickr? Zoomr? Other?
Anyone got any opinions?

OK, valid suggestion, but I'd have the photos printed and physically take them to everyone before I used Lamebook.
Trying to avoid that place for as long as possible.
Any other suggestions you useless bunch?

Hmm, been having the same issue on my end too, but it's not for 400 pictures, it's just a few very large pictures (about 5-8mb) in size which are panoramics and photomerges of places I have been too. Anyone got any suggestions?

Madmac, the reason you're having a problem is because thats a huge file size.
For displaying on the web you really don't need it that big.
Keep the size the same if you must, but change the DPI (dots per inch) to 96. The image will look the same on a computer, only in printing will it look terrible and blocky then. So if anyone tries to steal it and print, win win.

Are you looking for something like this mate?
http://www.stewartsanderson.com/

I have thought about building a website for myself, also considered blog-type sites. It would be nice to write about stuff we're up to. Did you build that site yourself? In any case, I'd need a hosting account, which may be overkill for what I need?
I've since joined Flickr, but not done anything with it yet. I gather there are various add-ons etc that allow you to display photos in a 'flash' gallery, which may be what I am after.

Hi Chris,
Did you click on it? Its NOT the same site as www.stewartsanderson.co.uk
That one is a professional photography hosting site. Its probably the best available, or at least was when i was researching them.

Absolutely pennies for what you get mate. Prices here:
http://www.zenfolio.com/zf/pricing.aspx
The basic option at £15 per year will do you just fine as you dont wish to sell or presumably auto watermark?
The storage limit is increased for free every year you renew too. Bonus!
They do a free trial too.

I use Picasa 3 http://picasa.google.com/
you can upload (in batch if you want) to picasa web album, you can have it private, public or invite someone to veiw. Also can do slideshow.
There is a plugin so that it is possible to upload picures from picasa to Facebook.
The only thing Picasa is not as good as photobucket is if you want to upload to websites. Apart from that picasa is really very good IMHO.

Its sharing options are great too... see here:

With automatically generated links you can share the whole album, just the photo, the whole slideshow, share any of those to facebook or twitter etc, it even gives links to different resolution sizes of the photo, or even thumbnail versions, all automatically from the one upload you make.
You can also choose not to share the full resolution version if you like. On mine you have to pay for that one.

Stu,
Thanks so much for your help. I'm currently trialling SmugMug, purely because it allows uploading of HD videos, which I don't think Zenfolio does?
Will see how it goes, I've uploaded about 200 photos so far at full resolution, up to 12mb in size and am likely to buy their 'Power' package for $60 per year, which is similar and comparable to the 'Unlimited' package on Zenfolio.
They both look very similar in quality, it was only the HD videos that swung it to be honest.

Your welcome mate, that was on my shortlist too and looked very impressive, although it perhaps looks even more impressive now, 2 years down the line. Very good value, especially when you look at the fact our exchange rate essentially gives us a massive discount!
Anyone who still fancies Zenfolio though, have a $5 discount on me.

My future sister in law does picture taking as a second jobbie and she sent my mrs a link to the site she uses down under, when I get home I'll see if I can find the link, from what I can remember though it was very good. Not sure if she did th picture arragements herself or was able to fiddle with the pics on the site but there were some which were single pics and some that had several pics put into the same slide if you know what I mean.

I've been on my SmugMug trial for a few days now and have uploaded 4 galleries to it, totalling 4.3gb so far. It uploads (on my 6.5mb connection) at a rock-solid 360-368kb/s. I haven't found anything in there I've wanted to do and can't yet. I'm going to try uploading HD videos next.
Thanks again all for your advice. There are lots of similar sites to SmugMug, but I'm well pleased with this one.
