Default Way off topic but interesting all the same.....Dreams

Just something that got me thinking recently, is there any way to influence your dreams? Ive tried thinking of a subject/thing before I go to sleep and it never seems to carry on into my dreams. If I think of something early in the day 50% of the time it does feature in the dream. Anybody really in to this shit and know if there is any way to manipulate what you imagine? Strange I know but works quiet so thought Id ask the question. Also, doesnt it feel weird when you can levitate in your dreams like your been pulled up by your back and just hovering in a room?!!
Share your thoughts if youd please....

thanks
Steve

It's called lucid dreaming, and you can teach yourself to do it.

Not a wise idea IMO, as dreams are a way of cataloging your thoughts, and if you mess with them, your brain's not sorting itself out like it normally does.

I did the whole lucid thing when I was about 17/18, and it was great, until I kept getting really nasty dream-within-a-dreams, so I would think I'd woken up, only for something either terrifying or really disturbing to happen.

One positive legacy is that I can wake myself up from nightmares...

I find dreams really interesting.

I regularly have really wierd dreams that are intense, so I tend to remember so many of them.

I often realise I'm dreaming within a dream too, and can then 'make/control' the dream to do what I want.

Interesting subject I've always meant to look into.

I've tried controlling dreams by thinking of things before I go to sleep too, but it's never really worked for me.

there's the old wifes tale about eating cheese just before you go to bed and it causes you to dream, sometimes I'll be watching a flim late at night before I go to bed and that night I'll dream about the film in one way or another, but not had any experience with dream 'training'

Yup, that's lucid dreaming. Sometimes it just 'happens', or you can teach yourself to do it.

As above I've been having some really intense dreams the last few weeks and have felt completely in control of what I'm doing and what I want to do in them, I never used to be able to do that.

I also find that the kind of dream I have is linked to what I've been doing that day/evening. For instance if I've had a really successful day at work or acheived things and then had a really good training session that night feeling really relaxed after, my dream will be positive and pleasant. I tend to get un-settling dreams when I've had a lot of things on my mind and will often lead to me waking up several times in the night.

ive had that a few times when you know something is so illogical that you must be in a dream so you then change what's happening. Off to look up lucid dreaming.

That's exactly what I've done. Literally realised that it's all a bit unfeasible and realised it must be a dream, so did as I wanted.

I am the most consistant dreamer, i dream almost every night and it is the most random shit, i cannot control dreams as such but i dream about the same places over and over. When i dream about being on holiday its always night, the sky is black and the sea is black and the sun never shines.
Last night i had a dream i took the front off the dishwasher (that i dont have) and inside was living a mouse like creature with pointy ears, it jumped out from its straw bed it made in the dishwasher and attacked me so i sucked it up the hoover till it got stuck in the hose and stamped on it!!

You sure that didn't actually happen? To me it just sounds like one of your stories that you regularly dish out.

Serious question though, do you normally dream about wrestling?

LOL thats quality - gotta love the funny dreams you can recall and tell your mates about!

Tom

EDIT: As a rule i never have the same dream twice, but for some reasons a while back i dreamt i'd broken my suspension on two consecutive nights - the first time i got to the garage door (internal) then realised i must of been dreaming, the second i woke myself up (i think) as i knew what had happened the previous night and that my car was fine.

Never managed to return to the good dreams!

100% ditto. I'm not sure about the whole dreaming about the last thing you were thinking of before you go to sleep.

Last night I dreamt about my old house when I was a nipper and our old dog. I was somehow the age I am now, came home, dog wags his tail, I throw a ball for him and walk into the kitchen, he follows dragging his arse so I somehow know he needs a dump and run to the backup door shouting at him to hold it in. I can't find the key and turn round to find he's laid a cable a dinosaur would have been proud of......

and then I woke up.

Now, I know for a fact I was not thinking about my old house, the dog or giant turds yesterday, so where it came from I have no idea. May have been lucid as when I woke up, I swear I could smell dog shit.

the mind is a very complex thing; i wouldnt try and teach yourself how to "lucid dream" - i just let my mind do whatever it wants when i go to sleep

dreams are fascinating tho; i tend to find that whatever happens during the day gets muddled up in my dreams, so really random stuff happens in my dreams

I definitely wouldn't do it again! The night always seemed short and I never felt 'rested' when I did it every night

Its very rare that i remember my dreams but at various points over the last few years i've had a few that seemed SO vivid, not nightmares but not pleasant either.

Stuff like being in a familiar house and a familar normally friendly dog turning on me, being in a plane crash and being the only survivor, being in massive car crashes and walking away etc.

Anyway, I googled them out of curiousity and interestingly the stuff I found seemed really relevant to things that were happening in my life at the time. A lot of it was to do with 'feeling like I was losing control' and I was going through some major life changes at the time.

dont blame you; we all do stupid things when we're young.

same reason i didnt do ecstasy or LSD when lots of people were in my youth. Nobody really knows the long term effects

Doesn't the mind take subconscious 'notes' throughout the day and try and put them altogether which is why dreams are often so wierd and varied?

I remember before having a dream about a yellow Ferrari being driven by someone I knew. I realised when I woke up that I had VERY briefly seen a yellow Ferrari earlier the day before and overheard someone mention the friend driving in a conversation I wasn't involved in. It's like my brain picked out points to remember that I didn't take note of myself.

Cant control my nightmares but i can control lucid dreaming to an extent..

im on anti-depressants at the minute. few months back, doc changed my tablets, i started getting crazy dreams, every night, sometimes, two a night, if i woke up and went for a piss, id have one before, and a different one after. went to see my doc about it, she said, thats the side effects of the tablets, ill change them to these (the one's im on now), the plus side is, they should stop or reduce the dreams, the negative side is, they might get a lot worse, thankfully it was the prior, and im only having one or two a week now.
