My super hearse is getting worse and worse, 115k on and the clutch/flywheel is about fooked.

Do I bite the bullet and spend hundreds getting it sorted (how much?) or chop it in and spend a few grand to replace it with a newer one?

Been a superb work horse for the 3 years/60k i've done in it, so would get another no problem.

It's a 2004 130 BTW.

 

Get a few quotes - unless you're lucky you're looking at Ł6-900!! If you like the car it's worth getting it done. If it's on the original injectors I'd be considering moving it on...

well i can get..DMF plus new starter motor for Ł150...half hinched tho.

Yup, plus once you factor in a release bearing it gets very steep. The DMF can also take out the starter motor too!

 

add that, to the injector problems, and you have the answer as to why i wont have a TDCi mondy

thats an option, but for the price of getting the DMF and injectors done, i could have an ST24, so i just stick with my dirty old V6 motors, push comes to shove, it will spin the shells or pop a HG, Ł250 for a new motor, job jobbed lol

 

It's not a matter of liking the car, it's a tool for me TBH, and been a bloody good one too. It must only be worth about Ł3k, so spending 30% of it's value on repairs seems like madness to me. Got it for a bargain 3 years ago so it owes me very little, guess i'll start looking for another...

 

you can get a kit that does away with the DMF at most Motor Factors now, so I have been told. You replace it all with just a normal flywheel and clutch

 

I have heard that ford brought out kits for most cars/vans eith teh DMF apart from the mondeo cause it can snap the crank if you change to a solid flywheel. Tho im not sure if thats true or not.

 

If you could do the job yourself it would be cheaper. Euro car parts have some really good deals on the dmf.

 

The dual mass is there for driver comfort (to reduce drivetrain judder) replacing it with a normal flywheel is the best option, you get a kit for the 1.9 vag tdis, flywheel, clutch, cover and bearing for 150 quid. have a look on ebay, the kits are readily available

 

I've just changed my Skoda from DMF to solid fly wheel, which a lot of people seem to do. Cost Ł230 for the clutch and fly wheel. Then fitted it myself, so saved q lot of cash that way also. Do some research and see if it's worth changing on your car

 

They're double that cost for TDCis, plus It's not that much of a saving unless you expect to own the car for the life of another clutch (i.e. you're a taxi driver). There is a question mark over how well the crank can handle the extra vibration caused by a solid 'wheel, and I've heard of a couple that have snapped, but both were very high mileage cars.

 

Ive heard that also, apparently, there noisy aswel, saying that, the DMF on my next door neighbours sons TDCi mondy, is rattling its twat in, i asked him if he had done the solid fly wheel conversion, he looked at me and 'what's a flywheel ?', obviously not then

 

I dont know if this is def true not but i heard ford realsed solid kits for everything apart from the diesel mondeo due to the crank issues. IF intending to keep the car for years you can buy a LUK one which is fine and fitted for Ł600

My g/f uncle is a taxi driver and has a mondeo tdci from new from 2004 and it now has 440k on it. Dunno how many clutches it has had mind you. I know it had one recently tho and he has always used the LUK ones.

 

It becomes a 'better the devil you know' scenario with the TDCIs! Unless you get another with the expensive bits already done!

 

sounds like a bit of a horror! why did we manage fine for a hundred years with solid flywheels and now its a major problem! i know on the vag stuff you can reliably cahnge them back to solid. shame the TDCI stuff isnt the same, maybe it has a balancer shaft that upsets the harmonic vibration on the crank?

 

Had mine replaced a few months back, the bits were around Ł400 i think....As my mate works for a motorfactor and i fitted it myself with a mate...

 

i did one last week for a customer 500 quid fitted so shop around!

 

How much aggro was it to fit?

 

TBH Dan, it wasnt as bad as changing a normal clutch set-up...just a case of lining everything up.....

If you are confident enough then there isnt a problem

 

Dropping the subframe and realignment is what everyone quotes as being the biggest part of the cost

 

Would say you wouldn't have much change out of 1K. FOr that you would be looking at flywheel,clutch,slave cylinder and starter if you needed one. . Maybe dearer depending where you were to take it.
Just done one at work last week and that was roughtly the price

As said subframe is the biggest pain. Getting it lined up then checking wheel alingment.
Not much roon for getting at the starter on the mondeo either
