Default Anybody a PuTTY guru?

Just a bit of break from the norm ...

Basically, I need to copy a folder from a directory that is on a Linux o/s share to another folder on an FTP that is on my LAN, but from my laptop (which is on wireless)

I need GB speeds across the 2 OTHER devices due to the filesizes (they are on the same GBLAN).

Is PuTTY the best way?

And do I use PuTTY logging on using FTP (port21) or SSH (port22)?

I probably didnt explain myself great, but you might get the jist...

Any help appreciated!

putty is only a console thing, telnet or SSH will make no difference.

tlnet to device, run ftp command.

connect to ftp on other device, start copy.

google "how to FTP" or similar

See using an FTP client on my laptop and copying from the one device to the other has to go through my laptop IE the WLAN... I want to instigate the copy from the Linux box and have the laptop ignored.

I'll try telnetting, see how I get on, although I thought PuTTY was similar .....

Log on to the server and then within that console, type in ftp (assuming it's installed on server) and the ftp client will load up from there.

Then you can ftp between 2 servers without having to use your bandwidth on laptop/wifi. And it will be faster as it's server to server transfers.

what he said. the question you meant to ask is "does anyone know how to FTP from a linux console" as oposed to "how do i use putty" all putty will do is give you the remote console.

FTP is a protocol, not a program

Agreed, once you have a command prompt in your telnet window its just a case of opening an ftp connection and doing a GET xxxxx
