Default Low voltage lighting

We have this in our hall - 3x 20w 12v halogens on a pair of power cables.

The traditional transformer died and I replaced it with a 60va electronic transformer that lasted for a couple of days,

Replaced that tonight with a 105va version and nothing happens at all.

I know I have 240v going into the transformer but the instructions say it needs a load and a special meter to test it - certainly my multimeter isn't getting a reading at the output side.

Any ideas, or where I can get a 60va traditional transformer?.

Hi fella, try screwfix or tlc even b&q if your stumped.it should never burn out that quick though so check the wiring out and that no insulation etc has fallen on top of the lights as they've got to get pretty hot to blow a trans that quick.

Low voltage are wank IMHO but still that's a poor showing, check the bulbs are deffo 12v and that your getting 12v out of the trans, usually the bigger the better but worth checking,as less volts means more amps hence the premature death of it.

It may be worth trying different bulbs. We had to change one of the transformers at work. For some reason we also had to change some of the bulbs as they would not work with the new transformer.

Think the new transformer was made by Halolite.

These lamps are suspended from twin cables that run the length of the hall, and the transformer is in a unit on the ceiling. The new transformer came from Screwfix and to keep it cool I relocated it to the attic.

I've certainly got the 240v going in but not the right meter to test the output.

I'll check the bulbs just in case they went with the last transformer but if that isn't it I'm putting proper lights in!

That may not have helped fella as you'll experience a fair bit of voltage drop with longer cables, how much further we talking, about 20ft?your meter should read the other side,or is it a/c only? Can't see why it's blown so quick otherwise, mines been in the bathroom for years with no probs.

You really want a wire wound transformer for reliabilty. Head to an electrical wholesaler and try to replace like for like

Just use some 240V led's from someone like www.dealextreme.com they last forever use virtually nothing power wise, can even get remote colour adjustable ones if you fancy them.

Have you read about his installation? The LAMPS are on exposed 12V cables.
