I heard on Radio 1 this moring that they have been recalled again, this time for engine faults. Its also affected some of the Lexus,s too.I thought jap cars were the best.
When i worked for Toyotas a few years ago i was on a course and the bloke was showing an engine and he was stripping it down.He said "its a waste of time showing you this cause they will NEVER go wrong".

Older ones were spot on - my other half had an '88 Sunny Coupe that never had a problem with the engine. 180k and ended up being binned because of tin-worm. Her '91 Mazda 323F is faultless except for the bulb in the driver's door.
I don't know where they went wrong!

Shame really. they used to be shit hot. my dads hilux is literally bulletproof and 10 years old it still starts after sitting in a corner for 9 months for the "tip run" when the back is full of shit. we had numerous japanese cars when i was a kid and al were brilliant for the job, boring but reliable though.
i feel the same about all new cars though. there too complex in my opinion. some things just aren't needed. i really honestly prefer pre 90's engineering. if my dads cars break down its a recover and get it to a garage who has the computer to fix it job. if my orion or cortina break its a cable tie or throttle tweak to get me home. i know they're a different class of vehicle but its all bollocks. what good is a luxury car if it refuses to start because of a bulb out or the key tells it not to! ridiculous.

Blown out of proportion IMO, as said above if Ford were in the media it would be no different than this...take 1.6/1.8/2.0 diesel focus 55-56 plate fan recalls, need a jumper loom, lower capacity fuse and a module shield on them otherwise they 'might' catch fire. I've done say 75+ of these, not including those done by other people at my dealer. Then you've got every other dealer in the country, and presumably dealers worldwide aswell.
I'm pretty sure that would lead into the millions aswell! And thats just one recall..

In this country the only vehicles affected are Lexus - no Toyota vehicles at all.
Its only in the USA/Japan that the Toyotas are affected.
Mart.

Toyota was always the model for the industry for perfection and that included anything to come out of Germany(the car I drive) but tbh in this day and age even the shittest manufacturers are making better cars and I just think their no longer playing catch up with the japs.
Thing I love about jap cars is their just so easy to work on,loads of room under the bay, everything accessible and so on.one quick fact I've noticed on the jap motors, they never use a 13mm head on a bolt, think it's due to superstition as it's an unlucky number.
It's not a major problem, apparently there have been a few broken valve springs occurring.
Nothing to get upset about......
Not as serious as the Cruise Control safety switch on ALL F150's and Explorers that had to be changed or the truck would incinerate, usually whilst parked in the garage under your typical timber US house.....

But they really are so much better,my old girls corolla automatic has never used any oil or water since she's had it,the only fault with it was a fan belt failiure which got me 20 miles with ONE RIB left on the belt!!!!changed it in about 10 mins.I do think they've lost their way a bit now but tbh I used to work for a ford factory as a spark and to supply Toyota you needed a ppm of 1 or below, that's 1 or less rejects per million parts!!we used to get about 20 a fucking shift!!!

Its a very simple situation.
A few years ago:
GM had lots of recalls - no one hears about them
Toyota had a few recalls - no one hears about them
Recently:
The US Government bought in with a massive commerical interest in GM to avoid it going bankrupt, and in order to get its money back it NEEDS for GM to knock Toyota off the top spot as biggest retailer of cars in the US
Curently:
GM has lots of recalls - no one hears about them
Toyota has a few recalls - EVERYONE hears about them
its ALL about trying to get GM to take a chunk of the US market out of Toyota, nothing more to it than that, the cars havent got less reliable, the recalls havent got more serious, its purely that the US government are making a point of ensuring that every little thing that happens with Toyota hits the news.

There was a recall on the avensis 53 reg up to 57 when i worked on them. The headlight bulbs were coming loose then they started to melt through the head lights. I used to hate workin on toyota they were a bastard. I can remember there was a corrola auto in one day which the selector cable had snapped. The only way to take the bolt out that holded the cable to the car was to take the dash out n heater matrix out. I just chiseled the captive nut off n put the bolt in upside down n put a nut on from inside the car. So they are easy to work on.
