Default sky internet suddenly become painfully slow, any1 else had this?

im on i think a upto 5meg download speed
and normally its ok, ive had it 3 or 4 years now and not really complained before.
but almost over night its become fucking terrible.

i just tested it and the results above speak for themselves.

its not just my laptop running slow.
play station is almost unuseable.
it cant do any updates cos the net connections too slow.
i cant download an itunes update or update my iphone as it gives up, says its going to take upto 4hrs to do a download that takes others 5 mins...
cant watch youtube as its sooo slow
this is at anytime of the day

its actually quicker on my old iphone 3g, not even 3gs!
my laptop is clean and defragged with no viruses.

the router is about 4yrs old but when i look at its properties it says its getting 54mbps.

is there anything that i can do? or is it worth ringing sky to complain?
or do i have to go to virgin fibreoptic?

Mine is pretty shit at the moment and I've gone from a 4mb connection down to 2mb but it's not that bad! Have you rebooted your router?

Mine needs a reboot from time to time and drops connection to various wireless devices.

My sky t'internet is fine but I've had loads of probs with the modem.I've found that it's because it was kept under the radiator and kept overheating, shoved it in the freezer for half hour or so and it works fine.sky seems very reliable to me tbh.

Im with orange and was getting half my speed for 4-5 days and it was so slow that my router would not even connect so i had to use my old speedtouch modem, then after a few days of doing speedtests and trying my router it finally connected and it has been connected for over 24 hours now, at the start it was still running slow and then today i got bang on the download limit that i should be getting, and its been normal all day now, so im not sure what was going on there , but fingers crossed now

And she sorted those billions of faults on your line whilst you were on hold?

When i rang orange i had to piss fart about doing 3 speed tests and 4 hour intervals, didnt get any further as my net magically came back to life, touch wood

she got me to go to router settings on some site, didnt actually do anything
then test the cable, wireless, phone socket, filter.......

none of them made a difference. then all of a sudden she asked some1 to line test and hey presto.

Sky broadband has usage caps often reffered to as "fair use".

Alot of broadband providers with this policy often will reduce your average speed intermittently deliberately in an effort to persuade you to stop downloading and this process is done automatically.

I suspect this limit has just been reset

If the problem reoccurs I would assume it is during peak usage hours, primarily 5pm- 9pm.

mine works ok generally, and is on a almost consistent routine

peak hours, like 5pm onwards are way down to 1mbps

all other times and especially early mornings are back upto ~6.6mbps

i have the 40gb per month sky connect pack, which is Ł10 per month and is just a re-branded bt unlimited package

I was told yesterday that sky r cancelling my package soon and I will automatically get upgraded to 20 meg.
But due to the distance from the exchange I won't see higher than 5.1lol
