Default Signing for the deaf

Does anyone on here know the sign language they use for the unhearing, if so is it very hard to learn a few basic bits, offered to help someone out who can't hear, so be easier for me if I knew a few basics, will do a net search, just looking for advice from those that can already.
Any advice greatfully received, thanks

Hope you find it interesting.

Makaton is more suitable for very young kids, but for general signing, BSL is the way forward.

Thanks very much for the input peeps, very much appreciated, didn't know nowhere near this much, happy to learn though, I only know the usual 1 or 2 finger salute, seem to get these a lot, not seen this one in BSL though!!
Been really impressed with peeps on here, ace that you help others, must be a good feeling, my hearing is ok, apart from menierres in my left ear, affecting balance, and slight tone deafness@4000hz, the normal spot to loose first through high noise exposure so I was told, didn't know till I had a free hearing test in Norwich@ the hearing aid centre, was always at the firing range when younger 11-16 yo.

I totally agree! It should be included in the curriculum! I know of a few primary school's around my way that have started to teach kids BSL, or at least Makaton!

The school i used to take kids to in Brighton was constantly using sign language, but one of the girls who then went onto college in Newbury was telling me that they are not allowed to use sign language during school time, only in breaks and there own time (as its boarding school) Which i thought was a fantastic way to help them to learn to communicate in the hearing world, she has changed so much since going there, her speech has come on in leaps and bounds and her lip reading is even more spot on than before!

When I was still in the Print trade, I worked in a sheltered workshop for people with disabilities, teaching them basic printing skills. (Ironically, that is where I met my girlfriend, she was one of the workers, and we have been together now for twenty years!)
Anyway, I had to go on a course in BSL, as we were employing some deaf workers, and I got Stage 1 certificate in BSL. However, as there are certain technical terms used in printing, we had to 'invent' a few signs for specialist words, but overall we got on fine. I actually found that I learnt more sign language from conversing with the workers than I learnt on the course.
Eventually, I got to the point that I could crack jokes with them in sign language, mostly obscene of course!
FWIW, sign language is always a good thing to have in your locker, you never know when you might have use for it.

Roy.
