Attention focus mk2 rs owners
I have owned my RS since november this year, and have covered a mere 5000 miles, one night coming home from work i noticed the car was louder and hooked the white lines a little more harsher than normal.
On further inspection i found that the front tyres were down to the cords on the inner edges, yet had 3.5 mm on the outside.
As the car has not been driven hard at all, you can imagine i was pretty annoyed, so i took it back to my dealer.
The dealer was Jennings in stockton, and was alarmed as much as i was.
The dealer contacted ford customer service and spoke to a guy called darren, who is the RS specialist.
Ford acknowledged the issue, but denied any other issues had been recorded. After much discussion i replaced the tyres and informed the customer relations (CR) that i wanted them to inspect the tyres for defect.
The wheel alignment was checked by the dealer and was found to be in tolerence. At the same time another customers focus rs was in for a after sale check at 6k miles his tyres were in the same way!
the CR people were informed of this, but still did not recognise it as an issue.
Having been told today, ford will not assist or look in to it any further, im taking my concerns further.
My concerns are this, having been told by ford customer service, this is wear and tear.(although they still have not examined my tyres)
Is the car fit for purpose, first service is in 12.5k miles, but it will need two set of front tyres to get there???
The car comes with 7mm tread not the industry std 8mm, and by the time 3.5mm has worn off the outside, its illegal on the inner.
The current focus rs is supplied with continental contact sport 3 tyres, supplied only direct to ford and bmw..... these tyres are not available anywhere else, you have to fit contact sport 2 tyres (last years product) as not for sale to garages or public...
Has anyone else experienced this, or been told otherwise...
I accept tyres are a difficult issue, driving styles etc, but this must be a fault??? or at least a re call issue....
Currently speaking to trading standards to see if this is fit for purpose, or if ford have a duty of care,
rant over.............................................f or now darren

Funny this, had my first service this morning. Car is one year old and has done just shy of 2000 miles. After reading threads on other forums etc I decided to inspect the tyres on the inner edges when I cleaned it the other week. I did notice more apparent wear on the inners and mentioned this to my dealer prior to the service. His stance over the phone was that if the car had been returned to him within a month of taking delivery he would track it up gratis however as I waited till the first service there would be a charge.
Knowing the master tech at the dealer he inspected the car this morning and said after putting the guages on the car it is out of tolerance!
Service desk guy re itterated regards to a charge etc and said for all he knew I could have kerbed the car or hit a large pothole!
I was about to contact Customer services just after I saw this thread.
The said master tech said they have had 2 in for tyre changes recently. One at 12k and one at 6K
Fook knows what the owners said but I would be happy!
Due to relatively low miles on mine and low inpending miles I thought worse case I would have to take the tracking hit out of my own pocket and monitor the wear.
Will speak to customer services and see what flanel I get...

this thread has been picked up already(by someone in ford) and has been forwarded to the head of ford warrenty uk, awaiting him now to tell me to take a hike! ill keep pluggin away, not bothered about the money for the tyres, i accept wear & tear, but i drive it like miss daisy, its the total blank responce thats annoying me. i have purchased 5 new ford in 4 years and have two ford works vehicles, its prob time to take my business else where.

I await with baited breath.
As you have said I can live with the wear especially as I have done 2000 odd miles. However giv it another 2000 with the tracking as it is and that will result in a somewhat different picture!
I want the tracking put right and I dont want to pay

Re-wind 20 yrs and you'll find the Mk4 ERST had the same issue, front inside edge worn to canvas in a few thousand miles. I remember a mate who bought an '89 S2 having these same arguments with his dealer.
Could be worth taking it somewhere else impartial for a proper full alignment check.
Do you drive over many of those mound type speed bumps? These knacker inside edges of tyres in no time.

My Mk2 focus is doing exactly the same thing
Outside of the tyres is like new yet the inside is near bald and at near £250 per tyre it takes the piss
My tranny sport van is the same , 6,0000 miles and the tyres are fucked
I blame continental myself as both the van and the focus have these fitted from new and both go through tyres like nothing i have ever seen
I now run the van on KUMO tyres and there doing real well for miles

I have changed the tyres to vredestien (spelling????) as these are hard wet weather tyres with good reports, ill monitor how these wear, as for alignment, ill look at an independants read out, but my issues are not with the dealer, as they are currently backing me 110%.
i had a simular problem with my mondeo st, which ate michelins, in the same manor over 8000miles, now cured by fitting different tyres and having the wheel alignment adjusted to ford spec.
im still fuming that ford dismissed the claim as wear, without seeing the tyres or sending them away to the manufacturer.......

carnt you lot just buy camber bolts ? my "coff"scooby was the same ,got hold some magic camber bolts job sorted ? or dont they make them for these yet?
My wore through to the wires in 5000 miles. FRSmk2
Its not a tracking issue. Its the caster angle, so will affect every car where the owner accelerates out of, or round corners.
Basically caster is negative camber placed onto the wheel when turning, the car leans onto the outside tire on a bend which now has say 1.5deg of negative camber but the inside wheel also has this increased caster but the car is leaning on the outside tyre so the inner tyre only has the inner edge in contact with the road, if you now accelerate then you will wear out the inner edge of the inside tyre.
Simon.

guys when complaining to ford make sure to mention about there "moments of truth" in the dealerships,,,,,, for are spending millions on customer service and its a BIG program,,,, next time your in there mention about making the moment,,,,, they should rethink this a bit
this is a ford thing and not a ford franchis thing might i add,,,, hence mentioning it to ford motor company in your letter of complaints as every customer of ford can be worth a min of 250 grand in your lifetime,,,,,, and more !!!!

i serviced a mk2 frs the other day at work which had done 10k.guy does do track days too and tyres werent worn down that much although they were due to be changed as on 3ish mm across the tread.saying that continental tyres are so shit for wear.we see normal focus's in for first service driven by elderly people and tyres are on the limit.very soft tyres

my sportvan is also the same paul and run kumho`s too
is it an effect of the revo knuckle. surely with all this clever technology to allow you to put 300bhp through the fronts does lead to some compromise with tyre wear?
reminds me i need to do the front tyres on my FRS, they have done around 20k now
