can i use a 1.6 gearbox in my 1.8 mk1

seen a lot of 1.6 gearboxes on ebay for peanuts and have just blown my 1.8 gearbox. can i bolt a 1.6 straight on. i know they use the same clutch

thats what i thought, cheers mate. found 1 thats Ł60 but 130 miles away from me but for a 1.6 or one for Ł150 for a 1.8 thats 10 minutes down the road from me

No you can't.

The starter motor is in different positions on the 1.6 and 1.8 so, unless you want to transplant ALL of the gearbox internals from the 1.6 'box into the 1.8 casing, you wil have to find an IB5 gearbox which has come off of a 1.8.

Pain in the arse I know.
