Default Rs turbo shaking steering and almost everything renewed.

Basic problem is that when i drive motorway speeds car shakes so badly even that steering column shakes up/down and it feels badly in steering wheel. Altough car does not shake when braking.. (miracle in rs turbo).
Normal driving shaking is so bad that i can feel it in the car chassis when put hand in the dashboard or something and everything vibrates.
Shaking is different depending day, sometimes almost nothing and sometimes so horrible you cant drive car cos everything shakes.

2 different sets of wheels tested, different combinations. Nothing help.
There is slight play in the steering rack and it makes klonking noise when quick turn steering in place.. There is old parts only the steering rack and those parts where bearings are installed , i dont know word for english.

New parts front

-Koni sport shocks
-H&R Springs
-Wheel bearings
-Front hubs
-TCA´s & ball joints
-all steering joints
-Brake discs
-Brake hoses
-Brake pads
-Steering rack rubbers
-Powerflex bushes all front

Ps. i think my car would go to shed under the blanket for several years if i dont find out what causes that. I am pretty finished with this thing.

i was going to suggest steering rack.
my xr2 is suffering a little with this, may just be a slight buckle in an alloy, if not then rack out and change for a new one

power steering numbs most wobbles though, on non PAS cars this becomes more noticeable.

Many thanks mates! My steering rack has really bad "play".. it makes klonking sound when turn steering wheel quickly in opposite directions. Car shakes wheels in the corners and in the straight, basically no matter if there is throttle or not or gear in or not. Whole car chassis shakes and car is really bad drive in corners. Maybe one of the worst cars ever which i have driven. So maybe its time to buy patten steering rack for 79€, i have to order it from Germany. I think the driveshafts are okay.. there is no play or extra noices. Now i have working LSD unit and car has about 270bhp and it pulls really badly left / right and it is real struggle to keep it straight line, without lsd it went pretty straight is this normal? =)

mate i can get you a ford rack fully refurbed and it will be most likely much better than the pattern racks you get as i had the same thing with mine and i ended up replacing twice!
let me know if you want one.

Yes this is normal, LSD transfers torque to the other wheel when one looses traction and then back again causing torque steer, my Quaife ATB LSD was even worse than a norm RST LSD for this!

Bush at the bottom of the column.

Noone ever checks these and always crack in half when people change steering wheels etc.

Make sure its in good condition.
The way to test is if you can pull the steering wheel towards you when sitting in the drivers seat then its foooked. . Taking it out is not hard and should be looked at!!!

??? what? of course they are different you plank the steering wheel is on the other side of the car lol

And Jano i was about to suggest the same think, the column has several bushes up its length. My car had the exact same problem, and when i took the column out all the bushed/bearings were awful. But if you have play in the rack there is no harm in changing that first!

Good luck

Rob:

All those plastic bushes, wearing parts are pretty new in the column. Only the steering knuckle joint is old because i cant find new part anywhere. Ford sells only the whole axle including the joint.

i will see if the steering knuckle is available and if yours is a genuine ford rack then you may want to send that off to get refurbed as the pattern ones are sometimes not that great. if you cant get it refurbed over where you live then send it over here and i will get one in fact i will ask if i can get the lhd rack.

Even if it would fit in, the car would steer left when the wheel is turned CW and vise versa.

Hmmmm... The knuckle is very easy to check for play, just get some one to rock the steering whilst you feel the joint. I would probably fit a cheap rack and see if thats the problem (they are easy to change) and if that does fix it look for a genuine ford one later.

JesseT, I wouldn't bother explaining it to him mate, he probably hasn't learnt his left and rights yet any how. But yes morph, think before you speak, instead of just letting your brain vomit into your mouth.

Antti O, sorry for the thread crapping going on mate, its got nothing to do with your problem, but some peeps dont get that!
i have asked the supplier if he can sort out a rack for your car.
he will let me know sometime tomorrow so will get you cost and postage you may not need to send your rack over either.

I got replacement steering rack yesterday and i can test it before paying. So i today will change that rack and then write some comments. We will also weight wheels once more.. that has been done then 4 times with 2 different weighting machines.

Some good news

My current steering rack was only tightened and that play in the rack is now gone. Wheels were balanced with very good balancing machine, only 5-10g weights / wheel. Steering angles was adjusted too. I think that vibrations are now pretty much gone what i drove yesterday 10kilometres it felt fine. There is still play in the steering wheel axle joint, any ideas where those parts can be bought? Ford sells whole axle and it is not cheap..

Another thing which i noticed there is pretty much play in gear change joints, are there some kind of uprated solution or repair kit available?

You can do a DIY fix on the rod by replacing the bolt that holds the rod in place, its not too difficult to do just make sure the nut and bolt used are good quality either stainless or zinc plated and lock nut.
