Default My 16v Saffy

Hi fellas. Kinda new on here, but been on FSOC for years, so some of you might know me. I'm currently rebuilding my 1.6 Azura Saph into a 2 liter DOHC 16v.
Originally, the engine started off in this car, originally a 2.0 GLS

Unfortunatly, the car was rotten so last week she was stripped and scrapped

The engine will now be dumped into this car

But not untill she's been repainted into Frozen white. Plans are to rebuild her from the ground up with as much new or refurbed stuff as I can find. The only Cossy parts will be the grill and the boot spoiler. It's not a cossy, so I'm not trying to make it look like one!

The engine. Sierra bottom end, Scorpio head. Effectivly an RS2K engine as it gives the same power with a similar compression. I'm using the Scorpio VIS manifold, which helps the intake, and the exhaust has a 4 branch (custom as there ain't one for this type) and the full sdtainless Piper exhaust.

Will update more as it gets done, but the donor is still being stripped so it'll be a while untill it goes for paint.
So what do you think? Not the most powerful, but certainly different!!!

That flywheel needs skimming anyway. There's a whopping great groove where the clutch gave up

Wow, very cool, how does the 8V Block match up with the 16V head, are there any problems? Also what management are you running? Thanks!

I'm using the stock RS2K ecu (non PATS) and RS2K injectors. I have to use them or the ecu would fry the Scorpio ones. To be honest, this is the engine the DOHC should have been in the beginning. The 8v pistons have cut outs for a 16v set up, and the 8v was always slated for lack of power. Basically, I'm trying to build a car Ford would have built if they hadn't decided to build the MK1 Mondeo

I'm not sure if a cvh one will fit. The twinky bolt holes are unevenly spread, giving a one way only fit. Not sure if the cvh flywheel is the same. To be really honest, I'm going for the unique effect rather than absolute power. The massive flywheel give a very very smooth engine. If I wanted huge power and torque, I'd have gone for a 4.0 Explorer engine.

Cool, I'll try that. I'm guessing the 1.6 Sierra cvh is the same? I'll have the flywheel from the saph's engine spare

Lack of updates, sorry. TBH, untill the car came back, there wasn't much to report. Anyhoo, she's back now

This'll be her engine. Sierra bottom end, Scorpio head. 150bhp standard, 165 as I have it. Never gonna challenge cossys, but it's different. My V8 will do the fast stuff

There will be a bit of bufty underneath

Lots more photos, but havn't got them off the phone yet. Hope you all like

Lack of updates. I seem to update one site, then forget about the other threads I started. My brain obviously came without a memory function

Anyway, here we go

While the saff (Louie) is being built, I picked this up to run around in

1.8 cvh. Yeah I know... but I like it It's a British built one, and is still in one piece!!!

Preped the engine bay. All new brake pipes fitted. The car's running the ABS power servo, but the ABS side of it has been removed. Coupled with the cossy brakes, I'll be able to make my vision go blurry when I hit the brakes, but without the pain of the ABS packing up every 500 yards

General front end shot. Cossy grill, but will be retaining standard bumpers. It's not a cossy, so I don't want it to look like one

Then the suspension turned up. Spax adjustable dampers with there matched springs. 40mm drop supposedly, but based on what I seen of others, I'll have to wait and see. If it sits too high the springs will get changed.

The only way to deal with rust. Cut it out and replace it properly

On went the new arms too. All poly'd up. Rebuilding the hubs over next week. Have some camber shims to sort out the comedy camber Sierras get when lowered.

As Porky Pig would say 'That's all folks'

Not too sure really. I bought the loom from a friend who already had this set up (it's actually his engine too). I had to rebuild the loom as I wanted to route it differently, so I just copied his. I took a DOHC loom, and spliced in the EDIS set up form a 1.6 cvh, with the help of an RS2K diagram. Fitted 2 HEGO looms as well, and fitted the loom for the RPM switch. It's not too hard as long as you follow the diagrams to the letter and are good with a soldering iron

That'll be a later addition. Want to prove the car first. It'll be cammed up, probably be ported and matched, then I'll look into the ecu

Depends how you look at it. I wanted to stay with the DOHC, but wanted something different. An 8v, with a turbo kit can make about 180bhp, my engine as it is will make just over 160bhp. Add cams and other bits to it, it'll make the same as a turbo DOHC. Stick a 2.3 bottom end on it, new pistons and a turbo kit and you'll be chomping at cossy heels. The DOHC in any form is worth it if you like to tinker, it's quite an under rated engine. Are you using the Scorpio block or an RS2K engine? Many people think the only way to go fast in a Sierra is to fit a 24v engine or a cossy lump-not so. The DOHC bottom end is bullet proof, and is much easier and cheaper to maintain than either of the other 2 options

You got 137 bhp then. 12 more than an 8v and 13 less than an RS2K. If you got an 8v bottom end kicking around, stick the head on that THEN it'll be worth it

Hate to break it to you, the 2.0 16v cams are the same. It was the 2.3 cams that were different, and they're a sack of shite

It seems you know alot about DOHCs, so I'd like to ask you, can the 8V block be rebored to accept 2.3 internals, and also would 2.0 16V camshafts be better on the 2.3?

I don't know about the rebore, but why would you want to? It'd would be a lot easier to take the 2.3 block, strip out the balance shafts and plug the oil ways for it. Fitting the 2.0 cams to the 2.3 would make a difference yes

Thans for the answer, I know its easier, but this would be better due to my local regulations, as in Czech, engine swaps are very problematical legaly, and i want it for an daily driver. Your car is unbeievable though, good luck with your progres!

Been aaaaaaages since I updated, but here goes. The car now runs, and is getting very close to being MOT'd. Working like a bastard to get it done for Ford Fair

Underneath painted. It ain't as good as the pics show, being brush painted. But the paint is thick, and should be ok. As long as I can show it off clean for a while, I'll be happy

Custom loom. DOHC twinky, with twin HEGO's spliced in and the EDIS system from the 1.6 CFi. The loom also has a stand alone RPM switch to control the VIS. On a Scorpio, this is controlled by the EECV, but I'm running RS2K EECIV, hence the stand alone element.

A bit more has been done, but no piccys have been taken yet. The side strips are back on, front bumper inserts are in, fogs are in, and the rear wheels are now pointing in the right direction. They look odd in these pics, as I have camber correction shims in, but the springs hadn't settled so it gave a strange look...

That's all for now!

WOW!!! Been a while since an update. The car has been MOT'd since July last year and it's first outing was FordFair, on the FSOC stand. Since the last update, the rear has been lowered a bit more, the diff has been changed to a 3.92LSD from a 3.62 and the ABS accumulator has been changed as that went AWOL

On entry to Silverstone

Plans now are to enjoy it a bit, try and find a Scorpion exhaust for it, and in the end, a turbo
