Default kitchens - what do i need to know?

need to fit a new kitchen, but it's not going to be permenent as it's eventually going to be moving into the extension we're having built

so, with that in mind, do i get a decent kitchen and then move it at a later date

or do i get a cheap and cheerful one that will do the job for the new few years?

don't want to end up spending twice, i've found loads of bargains on ebay, but, like we had at the other house, we bought stuff and then, halfway through buying the stuff we liked, found out that it had been discontinued so we've got different handle ans fronts top and bottom

there are only going to be units on one side really so i'm tempted to go with the cheap and cheerful option at the moment, but was wondering if there were any fitters on-board who might be able to advise me better

already got someone to do the fitting side of things as it's not just the kitchen units but that's all sorted

How do you know the kitchen will git properly in new area? By time you have new area the units might be out of date so wont be able to get anymore if needed.

I would go chirpy cheap cheap.

You cant really go moving a kitchen doode - unless the place its going is the same.

What are you going to do about extra doors and trimmings that you want when you move it.

Depends how house proud you are - my mom put up with 2 plastic garden tables and a sink/cooker while we did our kitchen.

currently the kitchen is 3200mm long end to end, we've got planning permission for a 15 foot extension so that leaves, a guestimate, or about another 800mm to play with at least in you include the thickness of the walls etc so other than the work tops, the carcasses would be a simple refit, i hope

just wondering if i hsould shell out now or just use your normal b&q type stuff, not too sure about having fitted this and that though because then that would tie me into specific stuff

You've pretty answered your own question - get the cheapo kitchen then once the work is all done, get the whole lot upgraded!

To be honest i think the question is somewhat bizarre! It makes no sense whatsover to get the new kitchen now and install it, then take it out and reinstall it elsewhere!

the kitchen needs to be changed as it's to the stage where its falling apart, but the extension might be a few years off yet

spoke to paul yesterday and we've got a plan, just need to sort some plumbing out and its a go

plus all the bits bar the end panels, can be moved

Just wondering, but why go through the planning permission route and not get it done? Surely you've spent money on getting it accepted and now your not building it

we've got it, the neighbours got it, because we are a semi detached

it's complicated because of a tree stump, it's in our garden, but he's expecting us to pay for it to be sorted, but he'll have to dig it up if he wants to put his foundations in, so we've suggested going halves on the digging but he won't have it
he's already got his kitchen bought and stacked up in his garage but is "arguing" over the Ł150 it's going to cost on the tree

anyway, no point in digging his foundatoin when we could do them both together, but he' snot budging so niether am i

but it's only a friendly bit of stubourness, as soon as i've got the cash together to get it done i'll do it anyway

but he's skint so he's not going to do it either

Even more so imo then Dojj to fit a cheapo one, because if you dont have the extension built for a few years you will want a nice fresh kitchen in it, not one thats had a few years use out of it!

i don't want to spend "thousands" but not knowing what a kitchen costs, i'm going in here blind

main cost is going to be fixing the bits that are lurking behind the false walls, as the previous owner had a habit of just boxing stuff in as and when, even the water pipes go across the wall, up the wall, over the top of the wall, and then down the other side rather than up the corner and into the roof space ebfore dropping down

but it's also the floor thats fucked, the suspended ceiling that's fucked, all the plumbing thats all over the place, the sagging shelves and the fact that the chip board is starting to rot, not to mention the work tops that slope the wrong way for the sink to work (an that they are the 26mm tops rather than the 40mm the sink is designed to work with )

so you can see there are a mountain of problems

Also think about whether you're going to have stand-alone or intergrated appliances i.e Dishwaser/washing machine etc as the cupboard carcasses will be different dependant on your choice

Only with regards to ovens and fridges/feezers. Washing machines and dishwahers dont have a carcass regardless of wether or not they are built in or freestanding. Built in just has a door fitted.

For a place I rent out i went to ikea - measured the kitchen, noting placement of wiring for ovens, plumping for sinks and washing machines and venting for the dryer etc.

They can help you plot it all out and even have a little model you can play around with to build it up.

Was a piece of pist, i got the red gloss finish:
set of draws
double cubboard sink unit
built in oven carcus
2 single under cubboards
1 large corner cubbord with pull out racks
2 top cubbords and a carner unit cubbord
work tops
sink
taps
kicker boards
spot lights
blanking panels
legs and handles
soft close fittings

All for under Ł800

took me a morning to build all the base units and a day to fit it all in. To be honest the quality was very reasonable, my only niggle would be that the shells are all white so they do stand out a little against the red but if you bought wite then happy days.

No reason you couldn't take it apart and stick it in another area and add to it provided they still do the range, plus all the bits are interchangeable so you could fit all no doors for a new colour scheme - worktops would't work for this though I guess.

I should have to be honest lee, But it's the misses old man renting the place from us and he seemed happy enough, especially considering how bad it was before lol!!

I know they aren't the world best kitchen but I was pretty impressed with how well it went together and how nice it looked for the cash spent.
