Default Giving up smoking!

Right,

I have 3 fags left in my box, and I dont want to buy anymore, and i really want to give up and that be the end of it!

I have used patches in the past but i found these didn't actually help me at all.

Can anyone who has given up or is in the process of giving up give me any advice, any hints and tips to keep my mind and hands occupied? I am going cold turkey with this and will start this from tomorrow morning as I have 3 left...i will spread these out over this evening and then thats it...in theory!

any helpful replies welcomed

Thanks!

If you've got the will power to stop once then smoking must really be you

been ok so far, was hard a break times at work, but had coffee n sweets to help me thru that, but the last few weeks i cut down alot by not smoking at work anyway, but gone all out no smoking today, basically i miss my old escort turbo, so using that as a target to save money is hopefully the thing that will get me thru it, as whenever i quit b4 i never had a real reason to quit

I quit with patches 3 years ago

Every now and again I get "Tempted" to have a fag, but knowing I cannot afford the Ł200 per month extra needed I stop myself, even tho I used to enjoy smoking

I was on the highest strenght patches for 1 week, asked Doctor for lower patches as they started making me feel dizzy, etc and she said I needed to stay on them for 1 month. The following week I cut the patches in half and after another week I took them off and haven't gone back since

The main thing, as with any habbit is finding something else to do to fill your time. I put on a lot of weight since quitting

just stop, its as simple as that, if you want to stop you will, if not well you wont

I find chewing gum a great substitute to smoking and keeps my mind off it.

I've cut right down to the point where I only had 3 last week.

I haven't really made a decision to stop but I started back at the gym and I found that I just couldn't run on the treadmill without feeling like my lungs were going to give up on me. Usually when I have a drink I'm worse but I found that even when I had a drink on Friday night I didn't need one or want one.

I'd usually have a cig on the way to work and on the way home and wouldn't need one all day at work unless I was having a stressfull day. I decided that after my box of cigs was empty I wouldn't buy anymore. I don't take money to work with me or my cards so I can't physically buy any and over the past week I've noticed that I don't even think about it when I'm driving.

Yes I still have the odd craving but I really want to increase my fitness again so I know that every cigarette I have is setting me back. Albeit I wasn't a 20 a day smoker but my habbit was getting worse and I was finding that I was smoking more in the evening. I'd say I was probably on between 5 and 7 a day during the week and over 10 at the weekend if I was having a drink.

Maybe taking up some exercise would help you to give up? Once you see your health improve and you start to get fitter it might stop you from wanting to go back to smoking

All will power. Had my last cigarette on new years eve and haven't touched one since. Sometimes get the urge but been fighting it since and will continue to have no intention of starting back up. What spurs me on is when I box. Whenever I start gassing in my training I'd think to myself "FUCK I bet if I hadn't have been smoking would've done another round easy or would have more power left in my punches". I was on about 3-4 cigarettes (roll ups) a day not much by at all by most people's standards but that figure used to go to a stupid amount whenever I was drunk which was at least once a week.

All will power.

I went cold turkey over ten years ago from 30+ a day. My physcology was that I kept a brand new unopened pack of cigs, "just in case". I therefore knew that if I ever couldnt cope, I could always have one. By not saying "never again" I fooled myself into seeing how long I could go. Not had a fag since. Spent the first three days in bed feeling like crap, like having flu. I reckon ive saved over 20K by giving up, more than paid for my Focus RS!

That sounds like an interesting theory! I suppose that way i wouldn't be thinking over the first few days "omg i haven't got none" then end up keep thinking about what i haven't got...instead ill have them but they are there and its me who has to say no and not give in....hmmmmm.....

cheers!

ive not had a fag for 3 months now,i used to smoke 20 a day smoking roll ups, which i used to buy duty free off site so the cost of smoking wasnt really a problem and been doing this for at least 10 years.I managed to quit on patches, was still hard for the first two weeks but slowly the cravings calmed down.
im off the patches now and all is good but have been eating alot since and getting a gut so im back at the gym.
best thing is im slowly getting my fitness back and i dont stink of smoke.
i did try cold turkey but only lasted till second day, but every one is drifferent as my brother managed to quit on the mints.
If im going out on the piss i do stick a stage 1 patch on (strongest) just before i go out as i just dont trust my self at the mo and this works well for me as i dont even think about having one or even want one, but its still early days for me though.
good luck with it.

See my sig, been a long time.

Major helps have been

i) Not being around other people who smoke (always kicks in the cravings)
ii) Not having a ready supply of fags about
iii) Being to broke to afford to

see its cost to a lot of people, it cost's me Ł7.50 a week to smoke. That's a pouch and half of samson baccy (50g) so it doesnt break the bank.

One hour at a time. Then one day at time and then one week at a time and slowly but surely you will find yourself wanting one less and less. Nicotine will leave your body after 72 hours so after that its all about telling yourself you dont want one. You have to be bloody minded about it and just be determined. I gave up new years eve. Had one puff a couple of weeks ago and thought thank god i gave up. the taste was awful, and then there is what you smell like after a fag. YOu dont notice what you smell like until someone you know comes in from having one.

Try and make it in your own mind that smoking really is the worst thing you could possibly do to your body and hopefully you wont give up, giving up.

You also have to WANT to succeed. Saving the money in a jar doesnt really help (well it didnt help me). It may help you, in which case thats good. After all its you doing the giving up, no one else. So whatever it takes.

Good luck

My mate quit mid jan, last week he started coughing up blood. He went to hospital on thursday, in overnight for observation, xrays and blood tests on friday. Sent home and having to go back on wednesday due to them finding a shadow at the bottom of his right lung, could be a number of things. Its amazing what effect that has had on his mates that do smoke, 8 out of 10 have stopped. He is 29 and was quite a heavy smoker but also pretty fit, does a lot of biking and running. He took Champex tablets to help him stop.

Thanks everyone your all being really helpful!

MadMac point 3...major issue to it tbh, and obviously I do want to give up, had a lot goin on and just haven't felt i could do it but if i dont do it i never will so i think now is the time to really go for it!

I think i will post on here as the give up goes on suppose a way to unload ... type instead of smoke so to speak! lol

Also MadMac where did you get that banner from? I think that could be a great reminder of my progress as im on here every day...seeing that could help remind me why im doing it and how well im doing!

Again well done and thank you to everyone

sorry to hear about ya mate, well done for giving up at such a difficult time!

Shame i didn't do the same, i've been smoking since i was 13/14 and my grandad died of breast and lung cancer when i was 15...it made me smoke more....wish i had realised back then what i was doing!

Thanks hun, his last wish was that i carried him in his coffin with his brothers, was a very hard time in my life and even no six years on i still think about him everyday.
You can do it hun, just think positive and try to find something to occupy your mind,

I'm just into week 5 of the Champix tablets you can get from your doctor, been quit 3 weeks today. I've had cravings 3 times since I quit, and feel so good for it! No coughing fits like when I've quit cold turkey for 9 months before. No nothing really. PM me if you want to know more about it.

No worries steve, i know what it is like to lose a friend, My friend died 4 years ago this year, in a motorbike accident, different circumstances to your's but going through that myself i can see why it made you decide to quit, esp with the link fags/cancer etc!

I had forgotten about them champix tablets! someone has mentioned them to me before! as i dont get much time off work to go to the dr, i think im gonna give the cold turkey a try and if when my next day off with time to get to a dr comes up and im struggling etc then ill go see the quack! thanks for that!

It's nice to know that even tho i dont know anyone who has posted...i feel like i have plenty of support
