Default doggy owners

right we have just got out puppy and are having trouble getting her to sleep on her own

her bed is in the kitchen and as soon as we put her in there she just cries out until someone comes in
we have tried leaving her to see if she stops but she dont

we have been told to leave a radio on quietly in the back ground
this aint working either

we try laying with her until she goes to sleep, but as soon as she wakes she is back at the door whimpering and barking

she just wants to be in the same room as us

what did you guys do to get them to sleep on their own?

any tips

thanks

Try and tire her out a bit before bedtime, see if that helps. Do you have a lamp or anything on in the kitchen as that can often help too. Did the place you got her from give you a blanket or teddy with hers mums scent on it? Hot water bottles (only warm water though) are supposed to be good sometimes as it gives them the feeling of her mum being there.

Saying that i may not be the best person to listen too, as we ended up giving up with our 8 week old lab after trying everything, so she now sleeps at the bottom of the bed in her basket.

i put my staff in a laundry basket with a fleece in the vottom beside my bed and when she woke and cried i just put my arm out to stroke her and now she sleep in the kitchen safe and sound when she started sleepin through. and if your pup starts chewing doors and stuff i rub fairy liquid on it as that help prevent them doing it again. good luck but a puppy is worse than having kids but then i wouldnt be without my kids or my pup. my pups 13 weeks now

For a pup i strongly suggest over tiring it then send her to bed a hot waterbottle under her/his bed (make sure it is not to hot for him/her before hand)

This will remind the pup of their mum, thus feeling safe.

my lab (8 weeks) whined the 1st night so slept with us
2nd night whined but was left til about 3 am
3rd night left all night, annoyed the neighbours and us but..
4th night silence, been perfect since
shes now 3 mtsh so we put her out for a slash about midnight (im about to) then get up for a quick slash at 7am then back to bed til after 8 for breckie

we take her water away after about 9ish, she is never in a hurry to get it in the morning but it saves drinking thru boredom and pissing for fun

when you train them to piss its best to say 'toilet' or whatever you feel when they piss then give em some loving and strokes when they are done (no treats!!!) we did this for a month now she pisses and shits at 1 word, its great

also my pup is better in the back of a car, pukes in minutes in the front but perfect on the rear seat

more tips if you need them

never treat for toilet, the aint daft and soon fake piss come for a treat then do it again (im on the lab forum)

Make sure the water bottle is wrapped up, have her/his chew blanket ontop.

Make the pup feel safe, even to the point let him/her sleep when your watchin tv. Then take it on a quick power walk.

Serios no worries.

The water bottle acts as her/his mum. The pup feels safe then drifts off to sleep.

It really is just a case of ignoring her. She will learn eventually. Things mentioned above like, hot water bottles, a quiet radio and a light will all help.

I have an English Bull Terrier, first night we got him, we put him straight into the kitchen and ignored him. He didn't whine or anything, no scratching at the door either. I'm really lucky as he has always been good at night and is still a pup at 11 and a half (ish) months

Oh go on then, I'll post a pic

If it's warm water, then don't worry about it, it won't scald her. If she chews it then she'll soon understand why its not a good thing to chew

I found with my past dogs you have to be cruel in the first few weeks. They will whine like a mother fucker at first because they aint used to being on their own.

But as said above make sure they are comfortable and warm and they will soon calm down. DONT go down. I know its heart breaking when you hear em, but you have to not give into the tempation.

And I wouldn't recommend leaving a light on. If its dark they should be going to sleep, make sure you link sleep with dark.

If they start sleeping on the end of your bed, you will never get rid of em... I know

well i think i will be going out and buying a soft bed to put in our room

the poor sod was up all night and had worked herself up into a bit of a state

its just human contact that she needs as she would sleep if she was with one of us

thanks for your advice tho chaps, guess what works for one dog might not work for all

We had 2 nights of hell with Kaiser and brought him in to our bedroom in the corner and he has slept perfect ever since, we leave bedroom door open and he chooses where to sleep now.

NEVER let them on your couch/bed if you don't want them on as they will not give up. I can now ask Kaiser to jump up on our bed and he will not do it, just plain refuses as he knows it is wrong.

Another great thing for training is a cage, I was dead against it but it works a treat. We would leave him in cage when we went out at first so he couldn't eat or chew anything. Then as he got older(3.5 months) we had a huge kennel and run made and out he went, now we leave him in kennel when it's nice out and in the house in winter and he NEVER chews anything, in fact I sometimes think in the morning he can't wait for us to fuck off. Dogs LOVE routine, when we leave him at weekend he gets pissed off as he knows we are not going to work. Try and give them the same toy whenever you leave etc and they will soon get used to you not being there.

We give Kais a Kong toy filled with treats EVERY time we leave him.

Oh ok then here is a picture.

You must be strong, its hard to ignore the whining though

Make sure it tired and dozing before putting it to bed (I found that once its in bed hang around for 5mins and sneek out quietly)
No food after 8pm as it will make the dog hyper
Get up at 3hr intervals and let it out, gradually increasing it to a full night over time
A teddy or blanket that you don't mind being chewed to provide comfort

Nearly all dog owners had the same issues to start with

One of the worse mistakes people make is when a dog starts crying is to go to it and fuss it, i know it is hard but you have to ignor it or it will not get out of the habbit or crying for a fuss. When we got out 2nd pup the friends we got it from kept picking it up every time it cried and even at 10 weeks when we got him home he would sit at you feet and cry wanting to be picked up, i know it is hard but stick with it and it will work out

she was crying on and off from 11 untill 6 this morning when i get up

she was physically shaking and her heart was going ten to the dozen, it took a fair amount of cuddles to calm her down again

i just cant do that to her again

i have just got her a bed that matches the bedroom (misses orders) and she will spend the night in our room

FUCK letting your dog call the shots

Get a cage and use that and you wont look back. They need to learn you are the boss!

Lying with the dog until it sleeps is plain crazy. EVerytime you go back when it's crying you are allowing it to do it the next time as it knows you will come.

The fact your going back to it and bowing down to its needs shows it that it can get its own way by whining. You havent been trying hard enough! Buy some earplugs and leave it by itself..

Sounds to me like this dog will rule you in more ways than one.

no way, we use to have ours in a cage in the bedroom when we 1st got her, i was speaking to a friend that is a dog trainer and that is the 1st thing he said to do.

And the what they have put about taking it to bed as it is a sociable dog thing is a load of bollocks, we have two staffs and they are very sociable dogs, loves attention, but they do not make a noise when they are in there cage, be me and every one else that has said leave her and she will stop it might take a week or it might take a few but it will, as you will regreat it when she is bigger and she wants to lay in bed with you.
