No, this isn't a pervy post, basically I've got a big plastic barrel thing with a mixture of oil and antifreeze in it, but it's quite thing so it looks more like antifreeze, my local tip won't take it. Anyone any SENSIBLE ideas where I get rid of it safely?

pour into more managable smaller tubs to pour into the public oil dump?
they should take it, they have containers for such liquids.

Yes, tried that and they caught me and gave me a slap on the wrists because it's more antifreeze than oil so it was sloshing into the oil thing rather than glubbing if you see what I mean. Maybe I'll have to mix it with something to thicken it up a bit, maybe a bit of Bovril.

You shouldn't have mixed it really......

I remember reading a while back you were allowed to pour anti-freeze down a sewage drain, because it went through the treatment works. I'm not sure if it's still the case.

There's signs all over the place saying you'll be prosecuted if found doing that.

No, I know I shouldn't have mixed it, it was just handy, but now I want to get rid of the container so need to get it all out of the way. Maybe I'll have to buy some really cheap shitty oil and mix it with this stuff to thicken it then take it down the tip.

I have a drum for waste oil only and one for "grey water" such as coolant and contaminated water (degreaser etc) - never had a problem at the local tip, except when they thought I was a trader

They're really fussy at our tip. I tried to get rid of an Escort Cabriolet roof frame at ours, it was all just the metal but they wouldn't take it because it was and I quote 'car parts'.

Some less scrupulous people might just say lift your drain cover and pour it away, but flush it through with plenty of water....................

Or if you wanna be really dodgy, just put it in old gallon sized oil cans, wrap them up in bin bags and just chuck the fuckers in the general waste skip, no one will know the difference.

Thats a really good idea - then poison all the cows and sheep in that field - that way you won't be able to have beef or lamb and no milk or cheese for a while 8-)

That is a ridiculous attitude! Most people, faced with that response, would probably dump the offending item instead, on the side of the road or whatever. A tip is a tip!

That is exactly what happens round us. Down the roads leading to the tip you're always seeing old tyres and all sorts of other crap just dumped on the side of the road. Ridiculous isn't it.

Consider yourself lucky you only have this one problem .

We have metal 25ltr paint drums (average 12 per week) and because they once contained paint we cant weigh them in for scrap or dump them anywhere , the cheapest way of getting rid of them is to pay per tin plus haulage which on average costs me around Ł800 per month . Then we have the used masking paper which because it has paint on it cant be recycled so the only way of getting rid of it is to take it up the farm and burn it on the bonfire !

The whole rubbish issue has been caused by the fact that most tips are now owned by private firms that make money from the recycling side of things , so anything that cant be recycled or is considered "trade waste" is not wanted and frowned upon .

we have a local council run tip that accepts nearly anything, from me alone they have had:

3 cvh blocks, a couple bust gearboxes, tones of oil/antifreeze mis etc

find a council run one - they will be glad you at least let the professionals dispose of it!

Pretty shocking they wont just accept it and ask you politely to keep them seperate in future! A lot of people would have given up and just dumped it somewhere by now!
