Default ST24 or GTi6 306 ?

Looking towards my next car, car number 27, been driving 5 years, 24 years of age.

Reasons why im looking at these 2? Well for one the ST24 advantages being the V6, which ive never owned before, something different from the run of the mill N/A petrol engine, and they are a lot of car for the money with most of the toys and a good one can be had for around £1000 - £1500, disadvantages, rear arch rot, sill rot, general rot, and if the engine hasnt had the metal impellor waterpump swap i heard its pretty likely the engine would have failed by 80,000 ish miles? Around 20 of my 26 cars have been fords.

Then i looked towards the Phase 3 GTI6 306, also can be had for around the same price, same sort of power as the ST24, but with a 6 speed box, being French, its a tin can, now i owned a Phase 1 S16 which i heard is basically a GTi6 with a 5 speed box? and i loved it,pulled so well, was so lairy, could throw it into any bend or roundabout at speed and it wouldnt bite back, best £500 id ever spent on a car... disadvantages yes its French the S16 i had, it wouldnt start on a flat, well it would but it would take ages, and had some other electrical gremlins which saw it get dismantled for parts and a 12 inch grinder took to its shell...

Can't work out which i want.. arghh!!

Got an ST200 a few months back, its WAY better than I thought it would be... its easy enough to hustle down a back road and refined enough to load up with people and stuff and head off down the dual carriageway. Plus, the noise of the V6 is brilliant.. got a K&N Panel Filter with Resonator Removed and its throaty as fook!!

Did around 450 miles in it driving to a wedding in Englandshire the other weekend, mixture of Motorway, Dual Carriageway and Fast A-Road stuff... managed to get 400 miles out of a tank with a wee bit left over according to the computer. That wasn't hanging around either, took just over 2hrs 30min to get from Middlesborough to Edinburgh on the way home.

I also considered a GTi-6 (amongst other cars) but after being bitten badly when I bought a 205GTi a few years back.. I'm always a bit reluctant to go for anything older and french.

Cheers,
Grant

i'd go GTi-6, cracking cars, but the ST is nice, just not as much fun.

Only rot ive seen on a ST24/200 is the rear arches and theyre a cheap fix with a new panel and paint

Ive had 2 mrk 2 STs and love them for what they are

Fantastic car for the money and full off toys BUT i understand there is more of a thrill driving the 306 as there the best pug built imo and handle great , liked my 306 hdi sport but not a patch on the mondie for build or comfort

Depends what you really want from the car and if youy like to relax on a motorway drive etc

ST24, very under rated motor, can be bought fairly cheap in good condition with decent history, mine has full history and 137k, still runs like new

And its for sale

The ST, it's a well built solid car, very comfortable all the toys, good size etc etc.

Had mine for 9 years, now on 145k mls, and runs sweet.
Never replaced the water pump, i believe the issue was on early models upto early 99, from then a different impellor material was used.
Alternator is a pain to replace though (just done mine).

They sound ACE, mines got K&N kit and Scorpion exhaust, runs silent as a std car at steady speed and gives a stunning V6 roar on acceleration.

Nah, the impellor situation has been hyped up. Early cars can suffer but it seems to be eradicated in the later ones.

You need to have a drive of both and see which you prefer, as they're both very different driving experiences.

Never had a st mondeo, but have had a 2000 w plate gti-6, great fun, quick, not great build quality, but for the money a good car.

i have a st 24, has done 155k and runs like new and the sound is very nice

no rust on it, early ones suffer it but the late ones are galvanised bodies i think, plus they have all the extras aswell, airccon, heated seats, switchable tc etc

for the price of them there a lot of car for the money, and they dont look to bad with subtle mods either

ST24 is a lot of car for the money, and if you put an ST220 K&N induction kit on it will sound really nice. the GTI-6 is also a nice looking car imho, and they go pretty well, both nice cars, but id go for the 24. as dan says, the impellar situation does seem to have been sorted on the later cars, although for the price of a metal impellar pump, and how easy it is to do, i changed mine just for peace of mind.

Personaly I'd go for the mondeo...but Im in my 30's now. Ive got a mate who's now on his second gti6, a very tidy 51 (maybe 52) plate in a light met blue colour....goes ok but the build and ride quality of both the ones he has owned has been shocking.
