anyone on here, own or have owned an evo 5 or 6. what are they like?? reliability wise, performance wise etc. anything to look out for when buying.
I really like them and am considering one if my escort has to go.
Also post some pics up if you've got one.
Cheers

6s look better but 5s can look cool if done right,4s look smart and would be cheaper than the other 2 m8,never owned one but been in a 6 it was fast, but you could get a 4 and spend the change from a 6 on mods

I've never been out in one, used to own a wrx sti but the crank failed in the first month, i've heard horror stories about the evo 4's suffering from crank problems too so that puts me off a bit.

Had a more or less standard 5 a couple of years back, was relaible, had to replace radiator but that was it. Couldn't tell you what they are like with tuning but haven't heard too much problems. I think the main thing to look for is regular servicing as this can effect re-sale value. Didn't bother me too much, so long as there were receipts, but it might some.
i sold my three door ,brought a 5 never looked back uses as much fuel as a cossie just keep regular oil changes look after it awesome car ,tuning i have got a fs power commander ,boost controller ,uprated fuel pump running 380 all day never gets hot just thrash and enjoy ,any more boost need to start looking at a stud kit to be on the safe side
Had a tuned Evo 6 Tommi Mak, was awesome fun.
They ARE expensive to run, but if you are use to spending money maintaining a cossie it wont be much different to that. They are pants on fuel too.
Make sure its been undersealed if its an import too as they can rust badly if not done.
There are common problems but nothing too drastic.
the MLR is a great resource for info

cheers for your replies, overall it looks to me like they are a good car, better than a subaru anyway lol . . . . . . so who wants to swap 1 for a mk2 escort lol??
hi mate i have a evo 5 which i have owned for 15 months now which was pretty much standard when i bought it, since then i had full 3" exhaust, apexi induction kit, evo 8 ecu, walbro fuel pump, Apexi AVC-R boost controller, paddle clutch now running 1.5 bar and it's never missed a beat and was used as a every day car untill recently.
awsome car easy to tune but they do eat the petrol but when you look that they run 560cc injectors standard your not surprised,
Evo 4's suffer from crankwalk witch was cured from the 5's onwards also they smaller injectors and ECU cannot be mapped as well so most change for evo 5, 6 ecu with bigger injectors so if i was you i would get the best evo 5 or 6 you can
here's mine

Stick with the 5 or 6, Evo 4's (as already stated) like a bit of crank walk.
There's a lot of sheds out there though, beware of gearbox syncros, rust (battery area, boot, underside) lash adjuster noise (although cheap and easy to change) radiator end tanks leaking, head gasket pressurising system, AYC operation (check fuse is there and no noises when flicking steering left and right) warped brake discs.
These models are obviously getting on a bit now and there's a lot to make sure is right.

FOOK!!! i'm 24 with 4 years NCB, not had a quote on an evo yet, but my WRX STI was only 800 quid.. . . . my other option was an m3 but i'd prob have to put money on top of my mk2 to get an e46.
See my status below..lol
314bhp Gti-r sold 2005--> 307bhp fwd Gti-r sold 2006--> 300 bhp Evo 6 sold 2007--> 280 bhp Scooby WRX sold 2008--> 401 bhp Gti-R sold 2008--> 350 bhp Evo 6 sold 2009--> 350bhp StreetSleeper Gti-r 2009
Had 2 Evo 6's already.
Well lets see where do I start
Too be honest after years of fun and anger in the Gti-r I decided the time was to move on to a larger, more reliable car.
The Evo 6 always looked special to me.
I was intally going to go for the Evo 4 myself, but heard stories about crank walk so turned my attention to the Evo 5.
Then at the last minute I held out for an Evo 6.
I think this is the best of the classic Evo's
Just sold my second Evo 6 3 months ago.
Bottom line is, they are great cars, too easy to drive, too reliable..lol
Just got bored to be honest after all the hard life with the Pulsar the Evo shocked me as to just how good it was.
Can't really get the arse out on it as it is well controlled, but iam sure if you tried it can be done.
The Pulsar felt much roarer and chuckable
I may sound mad but I couldn't wait to get another one...Pulsar that is.
Petrol and servicing is similar to the pulsar, insurance is slightly more not that much.
Go for the 6 easier to sell on, made £1800 on both 6's I had.
The Evo 6 didn't fill faster than the Pulsar but maybe it was as it got to a-b so effortlessly.
My Evo 6's were 300 bhp ish and 350bhp ish.
I am sure a 500bhp one would be a great car though.
Good luck

sleepersunny, those both look really smart and cheers for your advice, i've always had a secret fancy for a pulsar, ever since i was young.
how did the evo's compare to the subaru, i thought my subaru was toss, 1996 wrx sti, it was fairly quick but understeered terribly, anything tighter than a 3rd gear corner and it may aswell have been FWD. not too mention the fact the chocolate crank melted.

i prefer the look of the 6 hence why i have 1,
iv found there expensive to maintain as a every day car, but are loads of fun and dont give the hassle of cosworth ownership i.e. will it start and all the other thoughts in the back of your mind lol.
As a every day car people tend to find them harsh on their back and struggle to find enjoyment sitting in traffic but they handle like stink and are very good fun iv not looked back anyway especially since MSD have been playing with it!!!!
