Unhappy Common places for 4x4 to leak gearbox/diff oil

Hi all, my car seems to drip gearbox oil out, probably only a couple of drops each night, but my mums going mad about the drive and i dont want it all to leak out!

So just wondering if theres any common places,iv got it on axle stands atm, and there seems to be some clinging to the bottom of the sump, and alot around the gearbox mount, i suppose it could be coming from anywhere then shifting whilst im driving, iv cleaned it all up and hoping i can see a drip coming from somewhere later onm., But just wondering the normal places to check?

Also when on axle stands i started it up and put it in gear to see if any would coime out then.

I noticed the o/s/f wheels spinning quicker than the backs, and the n/s/f hardly spinning at all, and both the rears turning at the same rate. Is this normal or would it indicate another problem? Hope some one can help Thanks for reading.

You mean that the oil is leaking where the gearbox and engine are meeting or it is to the back of the box? It would propably be a seal or something (check that the gearbox vent is free). Is it sure gearbox oil? If it is from a front seal it would drip from the drain that the gearbox leaves when meeting with the engine... Have you checked the drain hole for the gearbox - transferbox seal? Also front shaft seal? Reverse switch is tightened? As for the issue with the wheel speeds thats ok nothing to worry about:
rear diff is VC so both rear wheels will rotate with the same speed, middle diff is also VC so again both front and rear diff's will rotate with the same speed but front diff is not VC so a slight friction to the brake of one wheel will make this wheel to rotate slower or even stop with a result of the opposite wheel to rotate faster or with double speed if the other wheel is stopped so if you can turn them easily by hand then no problem...

I would use sealant on the threads of the sump plug, I always have, and have had a sump rust through as a result!!
This stops leaks though, I don't see many dry sump casings, unless this is done.

Breather hole on the top of the box. Gold coloured screw with a hole in. They leak if you drive the car hard.

thanks for the replies. Pauls post sounds interesting, as it hasnt dropped any thing at all all since last night, even after having it running in gear, but i only use it say 2 or 3 times a week and when i do, it does get driven hard quite abit, maybe that would explain why it doesnt do it every single time. Is there anything i can do to stop it, or is it one of those things ill have to live with?

If this small hole is blocked the gearbox could drop oil from any seal when hot. Mine doesn't loosing oil from there even if it driven hard only a slightly oil dirt in the area (you know oil vapors that stay on the casing). How old is your gearbox oil?

If the oil is three months old then it should be ok. Yes that's better to do: give it a good clean and then drive it (but with high revs: high revs= high pressure and oil splashing) and then lift it up and check where is the oil comming from...

we used to get a lot of 4x4's with that problem, normally because they were overfilled, the main gearbox level should be 18mm below the drain plug.
