Default Opinions people - oil related

Hi All

Not a Ford related question, but I am interested in peoples view on this.

I have a Merc C32 AMG, and from the factory, she come equipped with Mobile 1 oil. Dont know the exact grade, but for the purposes of this question it is not relevant, as grade is matched.

I ttook her in for a service at main dealer, part of which (arguably all of which!!!!) comprised the replacement of the oil.

They have chosen to replace it with a Shell oil - Helix somethingorother.

Now - I know that the grade is the same, and that the oil is fully synth. BUT - you pay top money for service, and I must say, I can see no reason why the oil would be substituted from Mobile one other than for cost benefits (for them not me!!!)

Am I being just an oil snob?

Would you insist that it was replaced with the Mobile 1 that was recommended, or just lve with it?

Opinions on this please?

JJ

I'd go for the Shell Helix over Mobil1 any day!

Best off asking Oilman on here.

If i was sending my merc to a dealer for service then i would expect to get mobil 1 as its the factory spec'd oil.
If an alternative is used i'd expect if there is a saving in oil to be passed on to the customer......but you know that aint lily to happen.

No idea on the oil but I take it it's the supercharged one from a few years back with the hand-built engine?

If so, how on earth are they that quick with 350bhp!

Merc might have changed the spec of their oil?

personally i would have the shell oil over mobil 1 anyway, but out of principal i would speak to the merc main dealer and question it - you might get a few quid off your next service

If the Shell oil meets the specs (AECA and API)as well as the viscosity then it will be fine.

Merc have very stringent tests an oil has to pass.

ive worked for many dealer and not one of them has kept the oil that we sell over the counter on the workshop pumps, most of the time its a cheaper alternative but to the same specs.

rubbish, its from a supplier who usually fit the pumps/supply overalls for the staff and all they ask for is they purchase the bulk oil from them

mobil one is a SPONSER of merc hence its recomended,,, when for was no longer sponsered by BP for 2 years we had to take out the " ford recomends bp fuel on this car" from the service books,,, when they RE-sponsered ford we had to put them back inside of them, there oil was castrol in the bulk oil pumps as they supplied all the tank and pipes ect, same as when i worked at volvo, that was also castrol in there

as alex mentioned, aslong as its got the correct spec/addatives to it then its MORE than fine,,, as for the " wait for what oil man says",, you dont have to,,,,, hes gonna sellyou silkolene oil with the correct spec with a copy/paste speach about easter based synthetic oils that he posts on EVERY car website,,with the SAME oil recomendations for all vehicles

Hi guys

Firstly oil - thanks for all the posts. On the basis that it is the correct grade/ viscosity etc I will leave that as is.

Just on a few other points...

Jtech - what have you gone and bought - have you finally seen the light? PM is expected!!

Carl - 911 Turbo is snug in the garage till very soon! The weather is nice now, so itching to get her out and ready for her first trip to the Ring in April (cant wait!)

Mike1 - Yes, thats the fella! Love it - after a trip to DMS tuners it is as quick in a straight line as my old M5 now, but waaay more discrete than even an M5! Blink and you will miss it!

Sadly, not so competent through the twisties - feels a bit lardy to be honest, but does the job. I understand it basically is about as quick around the ring as an E36 M3 in the right hands, so it is basically one geneartion behind the M3s.

Still - rare as hens teeth which I love (especially as an estate as this one is) - haven't seen another so far! Piccie below
