Default help needed bleeding transit diesel! - fixed

got an ldv with a 2.5 transit non turbo lump. a mate told me to drain the fuel filter as they collect water, and ask mine had been sat for a while and didnt want to start this morning, it sounded about right. he thought they were automatic bleeding, but since dropping the arse of the filter out to drain some of its contents, the van cranks over, fires/coughs and thats my lot, so im assuming i do need to bleed it.

how do i do that?!

took out the little bung on the top of the filter head thinking that would alow any air to escape, but there seemed to be only a very tiny ammount of air in there.

theres no plunger, no bulb, no lever to pump, the only thing i can see that may be of some use to me is a nipple looking thing on the left of the fuel pump, would this be where i bleed it from? if so whats the proceedure?

turn igniton on, remove bleed screw at top of filter housing and then the electric in-tank pump will fill the filter up and expell any air out of the bleed screw hole

just loosened it off and left ignition on and nothing seemed to happen, cranked the engine over and it started leaking fuel, tightend it up, cranked engine, coughs and splutters but wont catch and fire properly.

i didnt take the filter off, i just took out the plug in the bottom of the filter to drain the contents, then screwd it back in again.

Fill the filter back up with diesel and crack all the injector pipes off and just turn the engine over till fuel shoots from pipes then as your turning the engine over tighten one pipe at a time !!

old shape transits are non electric fuel pump fed !!

Had one of these shows the dead pump syndrome when the filter had work done on it. getting common now but we dont see many in at ford now, back street garage beat our prices by far.

As mentioned, loosen pipes at the injectors and turn over until fuel has a steady flow and re tighten.a second person turning it over will make it alot easier

im assuming if i just loosen the injector pipes rather than totally remove them, then let it crank for 10 seconds or so, this will be enough??

ok so i have my lunch the drag all my tools out the garage to get on with trying to get this cunting van to start.

i pop the bonnet, look at the injector pipes and think "urgh FFS" then something catches my eye, the rod that runs between the metering head and the choke/throttle type valve on the intake is disconnected, not good i thought. connect it back up then look at the other end, choke/throttle/intake side, and the linkage is 1/2 hanging off, causing the valve to be stuck 100% shut i plonk it all back on properly, think hmmm lets try my luck....crank it over, fires first time

obviously knocked it off while i was throwing my toys out the pram fitting the new starter/battery

anyway its running sweet as a nut now without having touched the fuel system

Best thing to do is remove the linkage totally and cable tie the butterfly valve open or remove it totally, will give you more power.

the egr mod is a good move however taking flap out or clampint it open makes em noisy on tickover etc, i just run injecter cleaner every other month and stick at that, depends on how coked up your inlet is etc, if its not broke dont fix it, if you need a tad more power you can do a slight adjustment on the pump takes 10 mins, i turn all mine up a little
