good tip is to spray over the repair with a different colour , then rub down if ya need more filler in the different colour paint will be left in dents etc repeat rinse and u should have it some where near sorted.

this is called spotting when you spray the filler with paint as it shows the high and low parts of the filler but once you have think you have finshed filling your repair there is another product which is like a putty and it fills up the little pinholes that your eyes won't really pick up
if your fillering onto metal then make sure you scratch the surface up with some ruff sandpaper, it'l help the filler stick and make it easyer to feather the edges out. And buy some bigger spreaders, use the small one you get with the filler to mix it, then use the bigger ones to spread it, that way you don't get filler all over the spreader and your hands

Personal preferance, but I like Plastic Padding rather than anything else.
My old man used it exclusivly in his bodyshop even though it was dear, best stuff he recons.
Always remove the paint from the fillered areas or you'll get a 'shadow' in the paint.
Filler should be used to finish the surface, not build it up.
Put several thin skims on, rather than one thick one.
Once filled, we used to brush paint primer onto the filled areas to get a high build, then wet flat it off, found it filled any scratches well. Then primed over the top again with the spray.

personally i swear by UPOL easy sand filler and the stuff you want for filling really tiny holes, pin pricks etc is Holts cataloy knifing putty. Its available from halfords in a small tube for about 4 quid.
Dunno if its been said, but always use more filler than you need. For instance if you got a dink in a panel that is about 1/2 an inch wide, then fill 4-5 inches around it and blend it in, that way you get a nice finish and don't have to fuck about too much.
