hello everyone, ive just bought a s2 rad red rst, and ive noticed that the temp gauge is not regestering nor do the fans ever cut in, im new to RS fords and much help wud be appreciated, i know basic things, on how to service etc.. but not so much things like this
edit: does anyone know how to undo the bolts on fuel filter? the filter looks as old as the car(litrally!), so i am presuming they are ceased in!

your not too far from me, im in peterlee
fan not cutting in could be the fan switch, but how do you know its just not getting hot enough???? best thing to do would be to sort the gauge first to see how hot its actually getting.
temp gauge not working could be the temp sensor????
If you unplug the wire off the temp sensor (on cylinder head) and touch the wire directly onto a metal part of the head (or another earth) the temp gauge should shoot all the way to the top, if it does, the clocks etc are ok and it will prob just be the sensor that will need replaced.
I'd get the thermostat housing off, give it a proper clean, new gasket and a fiesta 82 degree thermostat. If it doesn't work as said look into new temp sensor and/or fan switch, would change them as a precautoin anyway.

The temp sensor is situated on the face of the block along from the spark plugs, it will look like (as you say) a threaded bolt, with a wire to a plug that clips/pushes onto it. this just unscrews out of the block.
These are cheap enought, worth taking the thermostate housing off, this is situated on the side of the block., clean it all out and iirc you can take the thermostate out and drop it in hot water, see if it opens, this may be knacked.
Best before you drive it around, to check these parts are functioning properly, drain the water out, flush it through with a hose pipe to get any crap out. Check the thermo is working and go from there.
Last thing you want is to blow the head or worse if the water is getting to hot or not flowing at all.

i have also found a circular black plug hanging down underneath, it has 2 fat pins inside it, does any1 know what this does?
and is it worth me hard wiring my fan up, so it constantly runs?

hi, the temperate sensor wire comes off the wiring loom that runs to the right of your cylinder head, that black plug hanging down(at the front) will be the reverse light switch that goes on the front of the gearbox, that is the same wiring your temp wire come off so if you follow it up from that plug hanging you should find the broken wire, get that sorted first, then you will be able to see how hot its getting, fan should kick in somewhere between half way and 3/4.
me personally i wouldnt hard wire the fan so it runs all the time,id rather trace the fault and fix it properly it will be something easy trust me. is the fan switch plugged in on the thermostat housing? located on the right of the head?if yes then first thing i would do is pull the plug off and cross the connections with a piece of wire (ignition must be ON for this) if the fan runs its a faulty switch.but obviously you need to run it up first and see how hot its getting, hence fix the temp gauge first.
hope this helps..

cheers every1 for replys, my only problem now is that the sensor you are talking about has no wires going to it, and i cant see any around the area just a black rubber cap with a hole in the end of it.

Cant understand why anyone would disconnect it though??? except maybe to hide that it is overheating???? I assume you have checked the for signs of a blown head gasget before you bought it??? like mayo in oil cap and on dipstick etc??

If you have no wire going to the temp sensor then that is your answer as to why your gauge aint working.
