Just got the above engine to go into my Escort RS Turbo Series 2.....i know that the standard gearbox isnt particularly useful for the sort of power this engine will run......just wondered what gearbox is best to use and maybe a rough idea on price for those people who may know of/have this conversion on this car.
Im in no great rush as funds are slow in coming at the moment and i have to fork out most of my cash on Saturday for the engine, but i need to start looking for the right 'box as i cant see the standard one lasting very long..........any suggestions??

I had a ZVH runnng 250bhp/300lbft and used a Bernie stg2+ box, costing about Ł1300 iirc

 

Alex blew up 2 bernie stage 2 plus boxes on his old engine that i have now and was running a smaller spec than i am now, i think i have been lucky so far im sure its only a matter of time! Olli blew his bernie box up the weekend on the zetec turbo engine i had built and his only running a bas map at the mo So I would not recommend one tbh lol Don't get me wrong there good gearboxes but not for big power!

 

I thought a few of the high power RSt's use the MTX 75 box out of a mondeo or such like

How strong is the getrag st170 gearbox??

 

Yep the MTX 75 route seams to be a good option but its not a bolt in job, some of the front chassis leg needs removing.

 

Mondeo box seems like the best option to me, XRStu did that on his fiesta and it wasnt too big a deal to fit IIRC

 

What power is the enigne running?

 

I'm on a Bernie stage 1 box with Ford LSD as opposed to the Quaiffe item, Have been putting 260bhp through it for ages and haven't broken it. Aparently I drive like an animal which I feel is a bit harsh

 

It's the strongest out of the lot, but its close ratios arent super turbo-friendly.

 

Agreed its known to be strong, ratios are good for racing

 

To be honest im not too sure what power the engine is running....as the current owner (rst in progress) is running it on a different turbo to what it will be running on in my car, and probably different management to what its running...id hope around 250. Mondeo gearbox anygood then? Iv been told the ST170 box is and up and coming conversion...gear ratios not good then? Need to get this right because i dont want to spend a grand on a box and then have it go the first time i drive it............

 

For that power i would go for a Berni stg 2 box.

for 300+ then a mtx is the only choice the st170 box is the strongest but its costly.

Budget 2k to fit the st170 box

 

My Berni Stg 2 box is now only two speed.

Going to get a MTX75 made up. but then you need to think about what clutch to use on the mtx75 as its not the same flywheel as the ib5.
