start off with brillo pads and a bucket of warm water to remove the heavy stuff then get a buffer with a compond head ie hard sponge type and lots and lots of metal polish (as you will need a good bit) then sit and relax for a couple of hours while you buff away, it can be done by hand but i wouldnt fancy doing it this way. go to midways in my resto (tread below) and you will see before and afters

I used wire wool and t cut together on mine and it came up mint

i used an abrasive polish or something like autosol with kitchen roll

I took mine to the metal polishers, now i just polish it will autosol about once every two weeks or when im out in it.

Who did you use James, with you being fairly local to me and all that?

Ive got a few bits down at RollsRoyce at present but their back door stuff seems very slow recently

There a Refinishing Place down colwick im told there the best in the midlands and i can beleave it from the work they produce.

will find the name and number for you got acard in my folder from the rebuild project.
