What modern Saloon cars will be classics
Just thinking about old school cars....
There are a few that stand out as classics...
I am really struggling to think of any new cars that will be come classics....
Maybe things like the GTR's and EVO's
But what else ?

Mondeos are too mass produced to be real classics IMO.
same as Jap cars, although the limited editions may become classics ( 22B scooby etc...but obviously not a saloon lol)
IMO it will literally only be the very limited editions of the modern saloon that'll become sought after and 'classic'.

nothing recently new will become a future classic
classic cars are old and big and brash and mega immense in the way they make you feel
all modern cars are too techincal

as with all cars the ones that end up being classic old school cars are the ones that get written off the most and broken for parts. obviously rust was a key factor in the 70's an 80's cars becoming classics as its the ones that people keep alive that are around today.
None of them.
Nothing will ever rival the driving/owning experience of a proper classic motor. Its all about roughing it, rebuilding engines in your living room and tinkering with spanners.
In 50 years time any 'current' car will still be a computerised mess of fine precision technology that will still be out of the reach of most home tinkerers.
Having stripped A series engines, washed mini slave cylinders in the sink and ground lugs off carbs to make em fit manifolds they shouldn't I can't see anything like that being possible with a Mondeo/Scooby/Evo etc.. in the future.

Future classics IMO (although not all are saloons, so sorry Dingle
):
First M-Coupe "Bread van"
E46 CSL (no other M3s, as they built too many).
All the previous M5s to the current V10 version.
Evo 6 RS
R32 Skyline GTR V-spec
Focus RS (again - limited numbers)
Puma Racing (again - limited numbers)
Some cars that are already attaining classic (i.e. cost shit loads) status:
993 Turbo
993 RS
964 RS
Mint E30 M3s

Lotus Carlton is a big saloon that is already achieving a classic status but i don't suppose its what you call modern as the newest are 15yrs old.

Classics are always relative to what is around at the time, so choosing what will be a future classic kinda depends on what happens in the future!
.
I can not help but wonder what effect fuel prices will have on 'affordable performance' and affordable classics.
when the generation come along which is used to duel fuel, and reclaimed energy systems. I expect the desire to own a shonky old ricer such as a Skyline with poor fuel consumption may be less desirable than it is to us today, specially if fuel costs keep rising

thought about this today, and to be honest the way fuel costs are rising and lets face it will never go down, supply of petrol will eventually get less and less. the only future classics will be the ones that the very rich will be able to run. the motor industry will then depend on the bio/dual fuel cars of tommorrow. so in essence if everyone kept the car they own now they will all be future classics but only to the people that could afford to run them, if the desire was there to own one
In 40-50 years time, when cars are powered by refuse (I've seen Back to the Future, so I know what happens) we will look back on these 'technical' cars and laugh at how simplistic they were. We'll look back at cars from now (which are in essence no different to cars from the 1960s) and be amused at how we thought it was all state of the art.

classic cars came about imo because some were built to last with a high level of craftsmanship, and that doesn't happen much today. you still have the modern classics like mk1 escort or whatever, but they are only deemed classics as people have fond memories of them from their youth, rather than them being really good cars.
it will certainly be interesting to see how things go, but i can't see many modern cars being held in high esteem in the future, and even if they are they will be prohibitively expensive to run
