Totally standard engine, Greys, T34.63, 3 bar, uprated intercooler and a chip is the most basic way Id say for power somewhere near 400bhp.

I was under the impression only 4WD engines were capable of around 380-400bhp on standard internals, head and cams?

Or is this incorrect?

400bhp is a shit figure to aim for imo, go for either 380-390bhp or 420-430bhp. Both of which can be done on standard CR just requires the correct choice of parts.

alot of ways of acheiving this figure, but providing your engine is in good condition to begin with you can use standard internals and standard cams & CR; depends on how you want it to drive really

you'll need the following

t34 turbo with a .63 exhaust housing
-31 or -34 actuator
rs500 intercooler
decent free flowing exhaust
siemens blacks 83lb or bosch greys injectors
3 map bar sensor
grp a coil
suitable chip from msd or such like company
grp a head gasket

this alone will get you to around 400bhp ish

but you need to consider other things too, such as:

rewired fuel pump (direct feed needed from battery)
044 fuel pump (not essential but i would)
oil breather system (dump the kidney box set up)
decent clutch (ap 6 paddle clutch)
arp head bolts

ummm i think that's about it..i'm sure there's something i've missed tho......

205 block(2wd) are good for 400bhp

I would modify the engine a bit if funds allowed as it saves maxxing the engine and turbo so much

I know the blocks are good for it, just thought the 4x4 heads flowed more than the 2WD heads?

Would a standard cam set up with a T35 be very drivable? Would changing one of the cams make it any more responsive?

heard be quite a few peeps that complete standard internals will be a nice strong 400ish bhp!but yes suppose u can put a bd 14 in etc!but i think u would need some work done on the pistons for clearance etc

skim the pistons to drop CR and get some head work done.

If money is no object then a good set of pistons is always an advantage.

Mines got low comps (7.2) and BD 14 and 15 cams with a flowed head. I'm only running (only???) 408 bhp at the wheels with 407 of torque... using peak of 28lb of boost on a T4 (rs500) with greys.

I have also driven 1374 Lee's rs500 which is standard cams etc and a much much smoother ride at lower speeds - depends what you want really? He has around 420bhp at the flywheel and is plenty quick - I really liked the car to drive.

Take it too far and the low speeds are a hassle - as per mine but when i open her up.... whhheeeeee

Fir 400bhp the CR can remain the same, you want this as high as you can get it, without lowering from the std CR.
Std cams will do 400 no problem, and be very driveable.
A T34/35.48 will do 400 all day long and give you the least lag.
If you have the engine apart I would pocket the pistons as even with std cams pistons the valves can clip, though mine is safe at 7300rpm.
The RS500 cooler is a must, other things that are a good idea are a fuel pump rewire, light de shrouding job on the head, about Ł275, DON'T enlarge the ports, you need to keep gas speed as high as possible.
A ARP stud/nut kit is a must as is a group a head gasket, but it ABSOLUTELY MUST BE RESTED WHEN FITTING.
I would also go for lighten balance while apart, and if funds allow get rid of the ecu for a more up to date managable one, or at least a L8, with lambda control.

Interesting thread.
Was looking at buying a couple of big spec cars with low comps, long studded, ported and polished head with a T35 and uprated cams, though I want it to be as driveable as possible and very responsive, as it will be used mainly round town.

I also want at least 400bhp to keep up with my current cars performance, so was thinking of removing T35 and fitting something like a roller T38 or GT30.

Well all of the described engines WILL produce 400bhp, but the differens is HOW they will produce it, and that is what most people seem to forget.
The wery first thing people should do is to think how and where the power should be, should it be torque or high power.
BUT the cheepest way to get 400bhp is std engine 2wd manifold, rs500 cooler t34 .63 or t38 and live map on minimum light blue / greys

reckon you're in the minority thinking that turbo will see 400bhp tabetah, and what does RESTED mean?

There is MORE than one person on here who has 350+ at the wheels with a T34.48.
My way of thinking is always tune for what you use most of the time, ie lower down power, ok maybe you lose a bit top end but that is only sometimes, a TORQUEY engine will get there easier, and unless racing just as quick.
Give me TORQUE over BHP anyday.

agreed about the torque over bhp for road use but if you're going for low down power then what rpm is your 400bhp at?

Mine hasn't been on the rollers, but Karl at NMS said its a very quick T34 car and is around 400/400.

Basic spec really:

Standard (but rebuilt!) bottom end
Standard cams
Ported head 25/26 mm ports, cut back valve guides, matched to manifolds
T34.63
-34 actuator
WRC MLS gasket
Radtech RS500 cooler and alloy rad
Siemens Blacks
3" exhaust with no baffles (Really quiet at full chat )
Massive Grp A cone filter
AP 6 Paddle
NMS Livemap - 32 psi peak dropping to 28 then 24 at the limiter

I really like how it drives at its very strong midrange although as its only a little turbo drops off a bit at the top.

As said above, I guess there's loads of ways of getting 400. Mine is probably the cheapest

a t34.48 will never in a million years make 400bhp.....i had a dam good spec engine at 32psi from one at 380bhp, it had absolutly nothing more to give....i tried. and turbos were lasting 6 months at this level.

a t34 .63 can make 400 just.

i did make 400lb/ft with the .48 though and broke standard boxes like chocolate

as for cr...std, or 7.5, i wouldnt go less at that spec

you either get 55lb, 72lb or 83lb, all are 2.8 ohms

mine are 55lb; along with a 500 cooler, t34.55, msd chip and all the normal other stuff (3 map bar etc) standard internals - i'm hoping for a very nice 360-370 bhp

I have to agree with you, my friend had his saph live mapped at engine advantages, they spent all day doing it, it had greys, ported head etc & a t34.55 & the best they could do was 397bhp & the turbo was only thing holding the engine back under the 400 bhp mark, With a .63 it would have done it no problem.

What would be the most driveble/ torquey engine?
Looking at:
Standard comp, standard cams, GT30, live mapped, siemens 83lb, RS500 cooler, long studded and WRC gasket for reliability. Sound feasible?

Looking for a comfortable 400 but would maybe like more int he future so thinking low comps and ported&polished head and better inlet?

Funny u asked this question, ive been ringing a few tuners this week asking same sort of questions.
Every1 different opinions tho and very different prices!

Pick a tuner you trust and ask what they think, tell them what u want and they can advise you

Mine is just over 400bhp with 392lb/ft torque and pulls well from about 3000rpm to around 7500rpm.

It is a 4x4 and the spec is:
7.5:1 cr
t34.63 - 32psi
ported & polished head
standard cams
greys
lightened & balanced bottom end
ported & polished inlet and 2wd exhaust
escos motorsport intercooler with pace charge cooler and water injection

the engine would be good for about 550 bhp with bigger turbo and injectors but the gearbox is already borderline.

I see a few people mentioning lightening and balancing... what weights are we talking about with a lightened engine... whats the effect ?
Also when you say balancing how tight are the tolerances, are you balancing crank and piston weights... what works best.
How well balanced is the standard engine ?

Mine is all fully rebuilt 200 block 500 cooler t34.48 cone filter on greens, breather system etc etc, and am having it live mapped but keeping the greens, its on the original fuel pump so getting a group a with a rewire, what sort of bhp and torque could i expect, its 353 now on its current setup.
