Heres some comparable stuff.

Be aware that if you want to run high end games like Doom 3, far Cry etc, you should really get a 256mb version pal

To Be honest, the best thing you can do here is tell us what you have to spend, and then we can give you a couple of options to look for..

Radeon 9800 Pro is good value for money, the 256 bit, 128 meg version, is what I'm after soon.
X800 for silly speeds....

The standard 6800 128mb nvidia graphics card will offer better performance than the 9800xt.

Have a look at this link below, the top graphics card on the page is very good value and comes with a few games bundled in too!

for the money get the radeon 9800 pro 128mb

it is actually faster than the 256mb version but slower than the XT version

for £150 ish or a little less you cant go wrong with one

Craign,

Show me a benchmark test where a 9800 pro 128mb beats a 6800 non pro in tests and i will eat my words!

Take a look at this review:-

http://www.overclockercafe.com/Revie..._GeForce-6800/

It pretty much owns the 9800XT which is known to be faster than the 9800pro.

The overclockers link i posted has a good card with good value, but having said that a 9800pro for around 120 quid is a bargain and is what i hace in my system.

Oh and overclockers returns policy has vastly imporved for RMA's of parts lately, they have made a huge push to improve their customer service, and i can vouch for this having to return a faulty graphics card myself.

It's the speed of the memory that counts not the amount.

CraigN,

I agree with what you say about benchmarks, they should only be a rough guide. How the card performs in a gmae is the important thing.

I may be wrong in saying this but a while back overclockers did decide to do email support only, i know that this was not favoured upon by the people on the forums over there. Im not sure what the result of it was though, i.e. wheather they brought it back or not. Perhaps it may be better if you try sending an email to them about your problem.

I am an ATi fan myself but unfortunately ATi dont seem to be offering a next gen card in the same market as the 6800 non pro. The clostest Ati card is the X800pro which as aimed at the same market as the 6800GT. Bit of a shame really as im sure ATi would do well if they had a direct competitor to the 6800.

I disagree SLIGHTLY here as a game like FarCry and Doom3 will load additional textures into teh extra ram and smooth out gameplay greatly when new actors come into a scene that you may not have had skins and textures available for....

If the RAM is fast loading textures isn't a problem, they just load and dump faster as needed, but of course, more of it is always better.

Never had a problem with Overclockers returns, however I do have £600 worth of fooked motherboard, processor etc. from Scan sitting at home, arrived fooked and they refused to do anything about it even after I had it tested by 2 different IT departments and PC world showing that it all was indeed fooked

get on ebuyer.com - online computer shop - excellant service too

got meself an ATI Excaliber Radeon 9600, 256Mb ram 8xAGP

well impressed with it - well worth it - lets me play quake 3, doom 3, URT and other performance hungry games in 32bit with a resolution of 1280x1024 with super smooth textures and amazingly fast and silky smooth frame rates

mind you, the rest of the system is upto speed too - 3.2ghz AMD cpu, 1 gig ram, KT4AV motherboard - well speedy :P

and then i got another one in the garage thats a bit slower :P lol

I am suprised about hearing probs about OverClockers regarding returns. They are a local company to me and I know a guy that works there, one of the things that makes OverClockers good is their relationship with their suppliers and their willing returns policy.

Shame to hear you had a bad experience with them Craig.

I bought a lot of stuff from them last Christmas and had some dodgy RAM, they replaced it no problem.

i spent £1600 with them last november my cpu has been playing up for months now crashign under load ive replaced power supply and system baord and only just found out its cpu

after spending ages on the phone i was told that to return a oem cpu would be very hard sue to the fact that i installed it myself and i may have overclocked it invalidating warranty.

when i told them i havent and i am a compaq/hp accredited engineer they went quiet and sent me a form im in the process of sending it back now

i went and bought another one anyways as it takes oo fookign long and i dont want to be without my pc.

I'm suprised by that, usually the whole point of buying from OverClockers is overclocking your stuff still means they'll take it back. Some of the stuff they sell they even recomend overclocking!
