I know there are a few of you guys on here from different constabularys. Just wondering if any of you could help.
I've been thinking about joining the force for a while. Is it really hard to get into? I've been told I have to do 2 years on the beat before I could chose to go into traffic. Also heard it's not guarenteed I would get a placement in traffic too. Although that's not too bad, as I am also interested in dog handling.
Can you give me some more information please, like how hard the physical tests are etc etc.

best thing you can do is get the application pack from the force which you intend to join and have a read, i can't remember off the top of my read but you do need to be very fit, something like if you can run five miles without stopping you'll be ok is a general rule of thumb.
as you say you will need to do 2 years probration, all the application pack takes alot of time thinking about and you may be waiting sometime from applying to getting to an assesment centre to do you physical tests, there will also be simple tests in reading/writing/maths.
it's been nine months since i applied, it took five months for them to tell me my application had been passed and that a date to go to an assessment centre would follow but expect a long wait. alas, 4 months later still nothing. But after some reaserch this is totally normal, a wait for 2 years for and assessment centre date is normal for my force. And then once passed and initial training is completed a further wait of 2 years can be expected to be stationed, depending on area. but thats for devo&cornwall, somewhere like the met for example will most likely have a quicker way of doing things.

The physical tests are not that hard if you're reasonably fit. You need to be strong though because most of the people the police deal with tend to want to fight back.
Can you stand dead bodies too? Trust me, they're not pretty and they reek most of the time. You'll have to search them, strip the clothing at the mortuary etc.
As for traffic, you'll need a blues permit first and you won't get that for at least 2 years if you're in a town or city. Once you've then got that, you'll need to prove yourself with that permit and show competence at handling traffic matters. So bank on a MINIMUM of four years before realistically being able to apply for traffic.
Dog Handlers?
That is a dead mans boots job. You need to be vastly experienced in all areas and have the ability to stay in post for the life of the dog. So you may as well scratch that one from the list for years!
As for joining, your call. You'll suffer frustration due to the kind of people you'll deal with, frustration with the public. It's physically and mentally demanding, more that the public care to realise.....but, I wouldn't change my job for the world. I enjoy what I do.
Good luck

Your a crap cop!
I think GMP are on the recruit at the mo, Its all ive heard for the last 2 weekends due to 2 Christenings with Police parents
Your 2 years Probation is being sent/shown different departments so you get to know who does what etc, after that you can make roads to follow your path,
My mate has landed a cushy after 5 years, 9-5 Mon-Fri sorting out ASBO's, He says its 10000000000000000 times better than shifts/nights etc as he's home every night and can 'lead a life'.
Pay is ok, pension etc and you do get looked after

It's not recruiting we have a problem with, it's keeping folk. There are three clear cut off points where people leave.
1/ After the two year probation.
2/After 4-5 years when you realise what the job is actually all about.
3/Ten years, cos if you don't go now then it will be too late as you are nearly half way there.
I've done 17 years, man & boy and have 10 or so to go. I cannot say I dislike it, but equally would not say I love it.
The pay is adequate. Just make sure you understand the new pension as I think you now need to work 35 years to get your full ticket.

Pay is more than adequte based on a lot of the "ive got 5 gcses and nothing else" peopel they except IMHO
A lot of these people earn more than twice in the police force what they would in the real world if they got the other job they are qualified for, in mcdonalds

Blame your fellow officers mate if they didn't abuse people then the small percentage like yourself who might be honest wouldn't get tarred with that brush. Physically taxing? Yeah right someone i know joined the police at 27 i think after working in a heavy job all his life and within the year he was telling me how he "sampled" cocaine on the job with a few others. Of course we all thought that was cool as we knew him but in reality its a fucking disgrace.
That said police work must be one of the best to do in terms of job variety.

In simple terms - there are some people out there who are plain assholes. They have come from a undisciplined background and don't like it when they can't get they own way - good examples are public order situations on a weekend in town. Some don't see the problem in going out for a fight and kicking some innocent bystanders head in.
Trouble is, when the police step in to arrest someone like that, they get accused of heavy-handedness or "brutality", despite the fact the person is fighting them back!
A lot of people love to hate the job and the people in it, but can't really explain why. I've found a lot of the time, it's peer pressure mentality.
Despite what is thought, it is physically demanding. Arresting violent people is hard work, carrying out uncompliant searches in custody is hard work, holding down a guy with severe mental health issues for his own safety is hard work!
The variety is good though.....Where else would you deal with elderly people who've tried to cut their throat in their own home during the night, just after taking a statement about damage to a car, for example?
It's strange the way that some people define abuse and especially abuse dealt out by the police.
What about the abuse a cop will get from a typical city centre on a Saturday night with loads of pissed-up clubbers? How many times would a cop give out abuse in the sense of verbally abusing, physically abusing compared to the abuse from a mouthy pissed up twat swearing, fighting, spitting on a cop, refusing to move on after numerous warnings of being charged under Section 5 if they don't?
It cracks me up if I watch programmes like Street Crime UK seeing a gobby twat giving it the big one to the cops, then when he finally gets arrested, cries like a big girl

Just like has been in the media, the job is paper work central
A file for a decent job will have about 15 different bits in it, if you include ALL the witness statements as one, and include things like remand application, special measures, PCA, bad character and POCA.
I'm just glad I get to tell coppers what to do, then fuck off home at 4pm

From: under the cabby... i think.
i work for the police as a vehcile technician, have to say i would rather be a technician than a copper anyday, the demands the police are under is getting greater and greater.
I don't think I would join up again. I'm not in uniform anymore and I do have a great job but there is so much paperwork / computer work that it stops you actually doing much police work.
For example I've spent ten hours today in front of a computer putting in an application to conduct surveillance on a violent robber. The guy is a arsehole but I have to justify why I should be allowed to violate his human rights (ie right to privacy etc) and then conduct a full risk assessment around conducting surveillance on him. I have to state how I will make sure we don't cause him any psychological harm and that we don't cause any moral issues within his community etc. Its total bullshit. I then have to duplicate that on other forms basically for anything I want to do to investigate this guy. He won't get looked at for a good week as it takes that long for all the applications to go in, a supervisor to endorse them then some poor superintendent to right a huge great reply to authorise it. It then has to be reviewed once a month with another great review form (duplicated over three computer systems) and associated risk assessments.
But at least I will be able to sleep at night knowing I have respected his human rights

Its because of all these people complaining about so called 'unnecessary force' that our police seem to use thats caused the bloody problem and why are criminals get away with murder (very often literally).
As said above, we are probably have the softest police and one of the most lenient judicial system in the world.
I find it funny that many of the people who moan about 'unnecessary force' are the ones getting into trouble themselves (or have done in the past), and then these are the people who moan when there burgulerd or assualted and the police have little power to do anything (due to the weak system.).
It goes without saying that most people who hate the police with a passion, are criminals or ex-criminals themselves.
I think they should have more power in my opinion. If you stay out of trouble and out the way then theres nothing to worry about, and the criminals may think twice about what their doing. Simple really.
People who have had experience of this 'unnecessary force' should not put themselves in this postion to start with.

bunch of ego happy bully victims IMO.
p.s. i still respect every officer who does it, has to be one of the heardest jobs, I couldn't do it myself because of the fucknut by association that comes with every copper so before anyone starts with the "you wouldnt do it " etc then they are right because i am not a prick

What that statement was aimed at was the people you see on street crime egging the police on and giving them abuse and asking to be arrested, then resisitng and moaning like a girl cos of the 'heavy handedness' of the police.

Again theres going to be a few exceptions, but im sure 99% of the time if the criminal/suspect doesnt resist and complies, whether guilty or not guilty, then they wont have this 'unnecessary force' used against them.
As a comparison, has anyone ever seen 'Costa Del Street Crime'. The police are allowed to give any trouble makers a quick slap round the head to calm them down. nothing to actually cause pain, but a little warning. This method seems to work well and the situation is sorted without any further action.
These peole moaniong about heavy handed police, should think themselves lucky that they dont live abroad, where it happens day in day out on a regular basis, and is actually part of the job, and it certainly doesnt even compare to the type of 'abuse' over here.

S1RST, I could tell you some amazing facts about the policing in Sheffield
Such as a certain police station regularly only has 4-6 bobbies to cover a large area at night , including some notorious estates
