It's not recruiting we have a problem with, it's keeping folk. There are three clear cut off points where people leave.

1/ After the two year probation.
2/After 4-5 years when you realise what the job is actually all about.
3/Ten years, cos if you don't go now then it will be too late as you are nearly half way there.

I've done 17 years, man & boy and have 10 or so to go. I cannot say I dislike it, but equally would not say I love it.

The pay is adequate. Just make sure you understand the new pension as I think you now need to work 35 years to get your full ticket.
