Series 2 over fueling
hi basically i bought a series 2 and it was missing the ecu and few little bits. got an ecu but it runs really rich and hardly starts, when it does start it chucks out loads of black smoke and can smell the petrol. Is there any way i can adjust the fuel? have tried adjusting metering unit but no good. When i disconnect the petrol pump it runs lovely for those couple of seconds so its gotta be the fueling. anyone help?
You may well find your metering head is knackered, i had one that overfuelled on one cylinder. See if you can get the emissions down but if its reading eratically you could well need a new metering unit.
The cold start injector only operates when the key is held in the cranking position, so unplugging it wont make a difference because it doesnt spray fuel once the engine is running. And if its stuck open it will be because its knackered internally, not an electrical fault.

you can adjust the fuel fressure on the fuel pressure regulator but i wouldnt attempt this unless you have some way of measuring co... you will likely melt the engine on boost if you do~!
Hi,
The s2 fitted with mfi, does not have a adjustable fuel regulator as efi,
the fuel pressure can be played with through the fuel pressure actuator
connected to the metering unit, could be cold start valve or thermo time switch that runs the cold start valve, fuel pressure related which you need some decent kit to test primary and differential pressure hot and cold test, for KE system,
to see what is at fault ie regulator/ fuel pressure actuator/ metering unit(fuel distributor)
you could also have a bad coolant temp sensor which tells the ecu one of the ecu's what temp the engine is and it uses this as info for running the engine, loads of things really, you need someone who knows the system,
to check it out,

hi all
sounds like the same problem i had could get my car to keep running after it got run a little changed everything even the cam as i was running std cam on chipped ecu any way my motor was running rich and kicking out black smoke when under load and stunk of petrol like you i tried to sort out the over fueling was told to pull out the multi plugfrom the fuel pressure acuator whilst the car is running and it run fine no fuel smell no black smoke and it run fine give this a go and see if it works if it does you could need a new pressure acuator hope this helps.[/u]

Hi,
The fuel pressure actuator is on the side of the metering unit, some are
grey and some black,(small square box with electric plug attached)
unplug the connector, when the engine is warm the current is zero,
but you need it for full load enrichment ect, so if it does run ok, you need
to check the system is giving the correct ma, voltage from start enrichment, warm up,etc. it may just be you need a new actuator,or CTS,
Also check the hose from the metering unit to turbo is tight & check the air sensor plate is not sticking in its travel

hi
Rite, i spoke to an old fella who has done a lot of work on rst's and he says he is almost certain its the metering unit as it was sat around for a year or so the O-rings dry up inside and just fcuk them up. I did already buy another one but i recon its got same problem. So now i am goin to take my mates off his car and try it so i know for sure. mission!
