dial up 56k wireless modems help
ok know this probably sounds a bit stupid
But its for me mum
She dont want or need broadband so its 56k dial up she is using, she has got a laptop so will sit in the living room with it, but the phone point is in another room.
This is what she has been doing and running an extension cable out to the phone point.
Being a modern laptop its got in built wireless, so have been trying to find a way to have a dial up modem and router set up combo whatever in the other room plugged into the phone point that she can then access "wirelessly" from the living room
Dont seem to be anything like that out there
Most dial up modems seem to be usb plugs and routers dont seem to have inputs for usb's (so probably wouldnt work anyway)
Have found one router that said it has got a serial port for dial up "back up" incase of loss of broadband, but that about £150 and then gotta find a dial up modem that connects via serial port, have seen a couple of US robotics that say they do, but then they £70+ so with the two its pver £200+. AINT happening
So think you get the idea of what im after, oh and if you can do it, how do you do it
, like my broadband router saves all my connection data in that how would it work on a dial up connection on the pc. Would it work just like an old dial up and then just "use" the modem attached to a router as if it were on the pc direct ???
Oh and ye guess the easy way is just run a permanent extension cable to the other room, but she heard of this "wireless" thingy lol, and wants something like it so she dont have to even plug the pc into anything just turn it on and have net access.

One last chance for this must be some way other than either setting up another computer in the other room or running an extension point.
I mean back in the day before broadband, surely there were some form of networks that shared a common dial up modem ? Or was the only way via another "server" type pc
Please someone gotta have some idea
Or at least tell me it cant be done, to stop me thinking about doing it lol

An answer
Any reason for that tho ? gotta admit a bit new and bit of a numpty when it comes to this wireless crack
Just seems weird as must still be xx% of the country still use dial up but would maybe like the wires free aproach
Maybe a nice little market
But spose most the people dont have bb these days just cos they too tight lol so maybe not

Class 1 Bluetooth mate, not your 30 ft class 2
100mts/300ft (ok in ideal situuations
But ye will have to buy the class 1 dongle to go with it as well
Dont see me mum going BB in anytime in the near future, £10 a month (ish) to download a couple of emails
BUT recon its at least possible, unless you ARE going to tell me class 1 WONT do it
Steve
Well yes and no lol
Guess she's on it once a night, so getting all the cable out wrapping it all back up again
Na it was just summit my sis said my mum had said, that it was a pain and wasnt there any way to do it without all the wires
AND seeing as next weeks mothers day and my "mummy" lol, aint your normal sort of chocs or flowers type mum
then just thought it would be an idea for a present for her, makes her life easier and its summit she actually said she wouldnt mind
(bloody hate mothers and fathers day, as they both got everything and neither as I said have ever been the "normal" type present people lol
)

When I was on dial-up I used to have the phone cable tucked in the side of the sofa until I wanted it, then just plugged it in.
Bluetooth is a great idea, but I've yet to see anything that just works 100% of the time. It always seems to be effort to get it working

I think you're looking for a hi-tech solution to a problem that isn't really there tbh.

have been thinking about that
How does that work for sending emails tho, think you actually gotta be connected to "your" isp tbh
Steve
Edit to add, spose she could always set up a hotmail account, im thinking of pop 3
you basically search for other wireless networks which are unlocked and connect. Then open your browser and carry on. Altho you are likely to drop connection from time to time, just like dial up i guess.

I understand the "theory"
Might have to actually start "sharring" with my neighbours soon as well as had "THE" email from my ISP about fair usage
Was actually on about just the email side of things as know I can RECEIVE email from ALL my various pop 3 accounts

Steve
In the POP settings, you put your ISP details, and in the SMTP you put their ISP's details. So, something like smtp.blueyonder.co.uk
OR
Just use you ISP's web based mail, and not outlook.
