The RS1600i rollbar is said to be the better one, being used on the Motorsport car. The roll bar itself is thicker and supposed to be the best for handling, the tie bars mount up with rubber bushes (as opposed to the jointed tie bars on a S1) and the RSi item has a cast alloy cross member which is quite a bit lighter then the heavy cast steel s1 item

Another way of looking at it though.... extra weight means more traction!"

There is very little between the two so wouldn't bother if I was you. If the item on the S1 is damaged then fair enough. But there is no point in changing it for the sack of things.

Also the cast plate on the S1 will b stronger than the 1600i item

The RS1600 tie bars are rose jointed as well, but the two tiny M8 bolts holding them and taking all the braking forces have always seemed scary to my eyes.

Only problem I have with them is grinding the bottom ones off on heavy landings

Oh and I have completely snapped 1 alloy cross member in 3 places in competition use, but it immediatly got replaced by another So it must be beneficial

I did have the S1 corner plates on my Mk4 Escort with bigger rose jointed tension struts but didnt transfer them over to the Mk3 car when I built it

Depends on the condition of the joints, as they are no longer available, and why your thinking of changing it.

Let your decision be lead by the state of the joints.

A bigger ARB will make it understeer more if you dont change the back one too
