my headlights in my saff 4x4 stopped working

replaced the bulbs and also noticed there was a 20a fuse in there so swapped that for a 10a one

still dont work, they did come on for a brief second

is there anything else i can check on it? or is it a job for the auto-electricans now

yep the switch works, if can switch the light lights on then when you try putting main beam on they get even dimmer than the side lights (only 1, the other doesn't come on at all)

and the high beam work fine

Try putting a correct size fuse back in (not a 10A!) and see what happens then. By the sound of it, if they came on briefly after replacing the 20A fuse with a 10A, they just blew the 10A one, most probably because it wasn't the correct size! (I Don't know what it should be on a Saff)

Default lights

My car has some sort of similar problem, it keeps shorting and melting the wiring loom that connects to the stalks on the steering colum, its done it three times, 1st time only a little puff of smoke and i ignored it, 2nd time there was big damage to this part of the loom and had to get this section of loom out of the breakers to do a transplant, 3rd and last time only two wires were damaged, auto sparkie has done another repair but now i too have no head lights

Can anybody shed any light?

that sounds like there is too much load being drawn across the wires rather than it being a specicif lighting issue

can someone with proper working lights give some readings as to what sort of power should be going through them wires?

i think they do but will double check 2nite, what does that tell you if they do?

so we reckon it could be the brown relay in the fuse box?

nice one getting a bit closer now

cheers

Dont know if it helps, but my earths for the lights were complete gash, and they packed up completely.

Try taking a good earth point with fresh wire, and connecting directly to the earth of the lights - this will tell you if it is a bad earth.

9 out of 10 times, Ford wiring failures relate to bad earths.

The problem I had with my headlights was down to an earth fault. I had no dipped beam, no main beam (but I could flash it) and no washers and all of that was due to an earth from the switch being missing somewhere. We added a new earth to one of the pins and everything came back.

I had sidelights, dash lights etc though.

There is an earth behind each headlight which might need cleaning up and there are 2 on the stalk because the headlights work on a switched earth.
