Had mine nearly 10 years, covered over 50k and its dumped me twice...

Once in 02 when it threw a ring, and just a couple of months ago the distibutor packed in...

Been running about 1 bar boost for over 8 years now, but its no longer an everyday car

Oh, and i once bust a gearbox at Croft but just managed to limp home on it.

Ive never known a ford like it, all the other ones ive had have been complete shite!!!

As above if you look after it and dont drive it like a race car 24/7 then you should'nt have any (big) problems but as said it depends what car you start out with if you buy one for 2k or less then it will need work and parts.

remember these cars are very old now if everything was new then you would only suffer from minor problems. The last time i had some major work done i replaced everything including car loom engine loom all switches only thing which goes wrong now are parts which have found there limit. renew and keep standard then the car will be reliable, you cant expect to be running 1 bar or more of boost with such old cars and not to be some problems.

Don't think its a coincidence the RST section of PF has the most threads and posts by far of all Ford marques

But yeah as said, buy yourself a good one, learn about them and treat it right. Good as the next car then

my last one was brilliant,
use dit every single day for 2 years, doing about 1500 miles a month, was running about 160 bhp and apart from the header tank developing a small leak it never ever broke,
but i did service it properly and treated it well,

my other one is running over 1.5 bar now and makes shite loads of power and breaks some thing quite frequently, but what do you expect, making double the standar dpower

yeah, who was driving it / them ?

ERST's aren't unreliable at all. The problem is people who own them rag the arse off them all the time and don't maintian them properly. My view is if you can't afford to run a car properly then you can't afford the car - period. It's like anything - if you drive it like an arsehole / abuse it and don't give it some TLC occasionally it will break down be it a car, mountain bike...........anything ! Common sense surely ? Seems to be precious little of that here lately though I have to say.......

Ta Common sense really. You can buy a shitter of an RST for 2 grand which is really bottom base for a runner. These kiddies buy one thats fucked anyway, then abuse it and wonder why it stops. Yet all these people say 'buy an BMW, they never break down'. OK - maybe it's because these cars are out of the price range of the dickheads who rag the arse off their RST and don't maintain them whereas if you spend £7k on a car you will probably look after it ?

Again, common sense.............but that lacks on PF most of the time doesn't it ?

When i started looking at them i though i would spend about 3k (In 1997)
Every one i looked at was just a complete bag of crap that needed 1000's spending to get it half decent.

So i ended up paying twice my original budget for the car i still have today One of the best things i ever did.

I rag it to death, always have done, have done countless trackdays and 3 trips to the ring in it, but it gets very well maintained and loads of TLC

As Mr S1 says, you need to be able to afford to run them, and if you cant give them the time and attention, they break!

They can be relaible as said above but they do need alot of tlc and u need to learn about the ins/outs of um in order to maintain um properly.
buy a good un 2.5k, 3k territory thats bin looked after and she'll see u good
one positive thing is alot of parts are readily available as lots are being broke

The answer is simple just like evrything else:

If you are going to rag the fuck out of 24/7 and be completely ignorant until something goes wrong and not service/look after it........YES

If your going to do the exact opposite of the above......NO

Likewise. Can't add much more. Buy a shitter and whack the boost up it's not a case of if it breaks but when. It's usually the people that don't look after their cars that then complain about the car being unreliable. Mine was my daily runner for about 8 years and it was only this last 2 that it's become a toy and I have a normal car for daily duties. In that 8 years it never failed to get me to or from work

Yeah, he is modifying his car, therefore not really having a lot to say, and if you saw some things he used to say about ragging it down the street, you will see that he 'got this shit'

In a word, yes. But a little preventative maintenance will go a long way. I look at mine as being a labour of love!
