Default My new bottom end issues

Just been to power to get my car checked after i rebuilt the bottom end.

Ian there reckons my big ends have gone

Ive just put new pistons, bearings, crank has been polished, new pumps and its still knocking.

oil galleries were cleaned. block was put in parts cleaner.
Is there anyway it can be the cam or is it definately the bottom end, because im coming to the end of my tether.

my friend had to blow torch a hole in the sump so the oil return could fit in it(think it was an xr3i sump i was sold on the car)

could this be a factor does anyone reckon. the hole was in roughly the right place when we made it

What bearings and pistons did you use? Genuine? Aftermarket?

It could be the cam, CVH's are well known for this, but a tuner should be able to give a closer indication as to whether the knock is coming from the top or the bottom of the engine.

Did you build it yourself?

Who did the crank?

Is it not an RST engine?

right
I used bearings that came in a blue box possibly ae or something like that, apparently they are the harder ones.sorry if this sounds dim, will try and find out asap
Pistons were brand new standard comp mahles
block was off a fiesta rst(not the one that came with the car, i bought this seperately to rebuild

crank was polished by qep in ditchling(sussex, they advertise in retro ford and have done a few mid power cossie rebuilds and alot of pug mi16's)

they supplied me the correct bearings for the tolerances, ie i left them to get all that sorted, i got them to fit the pistons to the rods and then i built it.

havent had a chance, Ive done 80 miles under 3k rpm, country roads driving and max 5 psi boost up a hill once or twice. ive been driving it so gently because it cost me so much. I cant see how the hell its supposedly gone already as i took my time and did everything methodically.

Before assembling the engine, did you check the bearings to make sure that the machiners had supplied the right ones? Did you replace the Thrust washers?

Also, if they didn't bore the block correctly, you could be getting noise from the pistons.

All sounds pretty harsh from me, sorry about that, could be something less serious I guess, but needs an expert ear.

thrust washers were replaced and i checked i put them in the right way round using the haynes

i took my time over stuff like that, double checking etc as I know I usually have a habit of rushing into things lol

bearings, i checked they were all the std size as thats what my crank was, just polished(my friend told me about that as he had that problem)

i told the guy to choose the best ones. He didnt use the one that was crushed from the pervious engine.but then again i dont know for certain if he checked. Is that a issue that can occur, rods came off an 80k fiesta that ran 10 psi apparently.

Well conrods can be resized if they are worn obviously depending how bad but this could be an issue.

The sumps are all the same. There is a distinct difference in bottom end noise and top end noise

not 100% but for all intents and purposes a 3i 1 will work fine

An RST block should have had the oil return on the base of the block.

Is the knocking from the bottom end or top end? That will give you a big helping hand for obvious reasons.

Whats different about them? I'm sure they are exactly the same, as in the baffles are the same shape size etc.

And microcat lists one sump for all CVH's

xr3i sump, ( i think im right in saying this)doesnt have the little hole in the plate in the sump for the oil to drain right to the bottom.

The noise, when i rev it to say 2k to 2.5 and let off there is sometimes a tapping / knocking. unfortunately i cant tell. Can you use some kind of a stethascope to hear it?? or is there something in perticular, as I dont want to take off the arp's incase there isnt a problem with them.

and it has a little tube going down from the oil return to the bottom of the sump. the fiesta rst sump had a little hole in the bottom(the plate above the bottom of the sump if people get me) which this tube was accomodated in. my other sump didnt have the hole so my m8 used a blow torch to make one for the tube to be able to be bolted in and the sump surface reach the block

Can you get a picture of this sump you are talking about? Would make it much easier for us all to understand

couldn't find pics of my sump but on this picture

http://www.sylva.co.uk/images/technical/cvh_sump.jpg

the bottom diagram, between the central oil pickup and the oil pump pressure relief tubes, i think was a hole on my fiesta rs turbo sump so the pipe running from the turbo return could drop oil right at the bottom of the sump. On my original sump there wasnt this hole, and I assume there wasnt a pipe from the front of the block as the original sump didnt fit on the fiesta turbo block.

The fiesta sump had this extra hole and the other sump didnt, so they surely cant all be the same

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

I get you now, your probably right actually as its only the turbos that have that pipe and it wants to return as low and as close to the pickup as possible.

Its easy enough to drill a hole though.

I cant remember how we even got onto sumps now

lol trying to find explanations as to how my big ends might ahve gone aagin after a fresh rebuild. Ive ordered up a stethascope from burtons as well as sump and other gaskets.

was going to run it, get a mate to rev it to 2.5 k and see where the tapping is coming from, maybe then I can pin point whereabout and check the bearings. Sump gasket is leaking but oil level is fine?????and im sure i didnt overfill
