Default lernt a VERY valuable lesson today.......

DONT EVER let your mates help you work on your car if they are competely clueless

ive spent all day working on my car gettin the head back on with a new all steel head gasket,

i made the mistake of letting him do somthing instead of passing all the tools all day and makin the tea, which he was very good at,

i said ...just put those plugs in the head for me.... just nip em up..

you can imagen what happend next.....the WANK stripped the thread in the head...
FUCK SAKE

now what am i gona do? it was nearly ready to run aswell,

WORDS CANNOT DESCRIBE HOW PISSED OF I AM

lesson lernt!!!!!! never again......ever!

sorry for shoutin...need to vent somewhere....i didnt really want to smack the nobber....lol

You can get some proper thread repair kits which are 100 X better than helicoiling...... basically you get a tap and an insert that is stainless steel with the plug thread in the middle bit of thread lock and jobs a goodun

Used it on an Audi S2 and never had a problem changing the plugs after fitting them...

You "can" but you have to "tap" the hole out and then fit the insert to a plug then a bit of thread lock and screw the plug in with insert on it, then when you next take the plug out it leaves the insert behind..... Only problem is that the bits of alloy will drop on top of piston as you "tap" the hole out..... now I wouldn't advise it but thats exactly what I did on the Audi as the owner couldn't afford the cost of head removal.... I basically got a long bit of metal covered the end in grease and popped it down the hole to collect as much swarf as possible from the top of the piston (personally I wouldn't advise anyone to do this unless its a very very last resort).

At least all is not lost with the head

i would seriously rather do that than take the head off again...its a toyota gt4, and is an absolut nitemare i will NEVER atempt it again.

alloy will melt anyhow in the combustion chamber, i know its not a good idea at all BUT...i may have to....

thankyou for your help

personally (if you go try and do it in situ) I'd get a bit of pipe small enough to go down the plug hole and tape it into the end of a vacum cleaner (so it's air tight) then suck up the swarf

Unfortunatly it was about 3 years ago when I did the last 1 and I don't actually have the insert kit...... the small pipe and vacuum cleaner is a very good idea as stated above

Bad move, its an easy thing to do in fairness to the bloke, should of said "be extremely carefull not to cross-thread" if he's never done it before, should start them by fingers!

I wouldn't helicoil it in situ, you need to drill it, tap it and then fit the helicoil. Imagine all that shit down the plughole

hoover was going to be my advice .... can get a nice sized bit of pipe through the plug hole ...
could try doing it with the piston at the top .. that way the swarf might just drop down onto the top and not down the edges .. use lots of sticky grease when you tap so it will hold the majority of the swarf when you remove the tap..

Mym mates Integra DC5 rattled a plug out whilst driving, it turned out to have stripped the thread in the head. The Honda dealership helicoiled it without removing the head and he has had no problems.
