Default Fuel Pump Relay Problems! Series 2!

Hi Chaps,

On Friday taking my car to Jamsport I think this relay went so the car cut out!

I got picked up and itgot brought home and then I got a relay from a breakers

Fitted that, after some problems I managed to get it running!

Tonight driving it...you guessed it...it went again!

When I put the red and the red and black points together the fuel pump primes but it doesnt otherwise

Anybody got any idea what could be fooking the relays up before I pay another 25 notes for one and that blows up too?

Cheers

i don't agree it's drawing excess current.

The relays have a hard time, they dont like being disturbed. I think that u have got another duff relay. Try one u know that works.

I haven't really got access to another one that I know 100% works before I try it! This one did work for a couple of days but it doesn't seem burnt out or anything!

Is there a way of putting a multimeter somewhere so I can see how much the fuel pump is drawing compared to what it should?

Just checked both the earth and the live and they are ok! I put a multimeter on the live and earth and it isn't even drawing a volt!

Anything else I can check before I have to splash out on an auto electrician or a fuel pump?

Anybody knwo where I can still get a relay I will know works 100%?

Right,

Got a new relay on (Thanks Safechav (Andy) )

Then I was gonna double check the dizzy to see if there were any problems there...

Then I spotted this...

So put a new cap and arm on but I am still too scared to drive it to test in case it breaks down

Anything else I can check to be sure it is not gonna conk out or blow another relay?

Who gave you inspiration to check the dizzy then Poom

Mr "im going to quit and sell it"

That relay should be strong for a long time yet, it's still touch and go whether the fault was actually the relays or whether the hall effect sensor in the dizzy is breaking down.

All i can really say is suck it and see

How strange i was telling you the same thing on MSN also

Well......you could strip the dizzy down and see if any of the wires for the sensor inside are un-insulated/damaged, its been known, but if its the sensor then you will never see anything.

To be fair, you had a completely raped rotor arm, and an old crusty relay, if the dizzy is breaking down aswell thats some shit luck!!

Just drive the thing locally for now until you build a bit more faith up, and make sure it gets hot as thats when the sensor is most likely to play up!

It always cut out just after I had floored it! Then let my foot off and it would backfire and cut out!

It is not so much about driving it locally...It is getting it home again! I am not sure if my breakdown cover charges after 3 breakdowns in a month!

Well, does it do it now when you floor it?

Sounds like what they do when the sensor breaks down....but they usually don't cut out you just get a good backfire.

Hmmmm well..........about the only other thing i can suggest, is borrow/buy a dizzy, and keep it in the boot, 5 mins to change one and can easily be done at the side of the road......keep a 10mm spanner with you and you won't get caught short

Personally i would say with the state of that rotor arm i think it would be fair to say that was your main problem but.....getting a spare dizzy would be a sensible option
