Default Puma Wheels

Hi guys I have just joined and I am already asking you for advice

I was wondering which wheels will fit on my Puma 1.4 as it has the standard 5 spokes on at the mo but they look a bit small as I think they are 15" and I would like to go up to 16" or 17"

I was thinking about Escort Cosworth wheels but I wasn't sure if they would fit (offset etc.) Also I wouldn't mind knowing what other wheels would fit and getting opinions on what you think would look good.

Cheers.

OK cheers. Now I need to decide what style wheels to go for. I have got lots of time though as I won't be changing them for a while anyway.

What are people's thoughts about the Escort Cossie wheels?

Hey I have BK racing 5 spoke 17" low profile alloys on my 1.7 beast! They were already on the car when I purchased it.
I wouldn't advise it purley because you can feel every bump in the road! And the steering also sometimes shakes as the wheels are so big it's only allowing a few inches for the tyres to turn! Had the tracking and balancing done 4 times since I've had the car (Feb06 - Nov06) and within a few days it throws it back out again. Been advised this from 3 garages, that the wheels look fantastic and set the car off but I'll be going through tyres like I would hot dinners! And 17" low profiles aren't cheap I can tell you!

I've had my Poomie on 17's and lowered 40mm for months now, and my tracking is fine. yes the ride is a tad firmer, but it more than makes up for it in the corners. When lowered, motorway driving is MUCH more assured . Doesn't feel like its going to take off when you get over 71pmh
You gotta lower it if you get 17's cause otherwise it looks even more like a moon buggy... (mines the silver one....)

Hi Darren,
Your wheels look 'gert' as us Bristolian would say.
Well I've just had a service & MOT done on the thing as the shaking has kinda stopped!
I must say they certainly do set the car off.
Will bear in mind lowering it!
Being a girl and not having a brother, how much does it cost to get it slightyl lowered!?

Morgz,

As I don't know what 'gert' means, i dont know whether to feel or

If you just want to lower and not uprate the shocks, then i'd say about £100ish for the springs and about the same again to fit by a decent garage. If you want the whole suspension bit (Shocks and springs) then £200-£300 for the hardware and £200ish to fit. (Educated guess)
(Mine were on the car when i bought it! )

Yeah, shock absorbers.... If you've only just had 'em done, then just get some Eibach or someones springs and fit those.
Some sources say that if you lower the car on STD shocks (absorbers ) then they wear out faster as they under more load / shorter working stroke. But mine are factory STD ones and mine are still fine.

Yeah they seem really good! Have emailed the seller.

Thanks for all your help!

Out of interest have you ever had any major problems with your Puma?

No, not really had any problems.
Just had the services as per schedule, cambelt done at 5 years, and not had anything else happen yet. Had a nail in a tyre thinking it'd need a new tyre, but went in sideways hardly the fault of the car though.

Changed the front brake disc's and pads (greenstuff) for EBC ones as the Fraud ones had just about had it at 40K. Easy job and £75 for bits delivered direct from EBC.

Oh, and dont "crunch" reverse in, cause those little shavings of cog that come off can sieze your gearbox up if you constantly do it... If it doesn't go in 1st time. Lift clutch, press down again and try the 'stick again. Always goes in second time

You had yours long?

I fitted 17 inch wheels to my Puma - they were fine. You've got to use 40 series rubber - NOT 45's or they'll rub. Mine was lowered too by 30mm with Eibach springs from ESP design. I had no probs at all, but a mate of mine used 40mm PI springs with 17 inch alloys on his Puma and they kept bottoming- out.

Dont go with the Cossie alloys the off set means they will stick out of the arch.

Got new 17" wheels (Fox3EVO) with Toyo rubber and lowered on FRP / Weitec suspension now. Think it looks better

My Mrs has a 1.7i (02 plate) and it seems to always crunch when going into reverse, thought it was just hers that did it but must be a common problem.

Can anything be done to sort it?

Great car though, drives like a go kart ! Steering goes a bit light on the motorway though. Feels every bit as fast 0-60 as my 2.0TDCi Focus, though definitely lacking top end

Steering light at speed?

Get it lowered!!! Mines down 40mm at the front (bit more at the back) and it's as solid as a rock at 130mph (yes..... on the autobahns to Nurburgring before you say owt..) The 17" wheels help no end too. I put on my spare set of STD prop 15" alloys last weekend to see how it feels and I hate it! Bit more comfy about the pot holes, but cornering and top end is horrible! 17's are going back on ASAP!

Nothing to "cure" the gearbox crunch, just re-engage the clutch and try again, Just how the IB5 'box is made unfortunately

EDIT: Girlfriend (also got a puma) recommends getting your tracking/balancing checked as well as your bushes (replace with powerflex if they're shot) as this helped her's no end at "speed"

Default K&N HPC rims

Hi,

My STD wheels just passed the last MOT (advised that they're all a bit dented on the inside). Not sure why it's a potential MOT failure but whatever.
I have some 17" K&N HPC wheels (from a Caterham) available shod with 205/40 rubber but must admit I'm mechanically inept so any advice gratefully received.

It's a potential MOT failure as if your wheels are anything but round, there's a potential they'll crack / let air out / cause vibration etc under load.
Mine had this crack on the inside of the wheel, and I wondered why the tyre was loosing pressure every week One good "thwack" on a pot hole and the wheel could have broken big time.
