It's a potential MOT failure as if your wheels are anything but round, there's a potential they'll crack / let air out / cause vibration etc under load.
Mine had this crack on the inside of the wheel, and I wondered why the tyre was loosing pressure every week One good "thwack" on a pot hole and the wheel could have broken big time.
