Would the next best way not be to use a burette with or something with an SG as close to water as possible ? I don't know and i'm enquiring as well

Yeah but head needs to come off really, otherwise you will loose the liquid down the side of the rims into the sump!!!, with the head off you can seal them with grease

of course

and if the head was off ideally use a piece of perspex / glass to cover the bore and then gradually add said liquid via a small hole ?

Why not try this !!

Ensure a cylinder is on BDC after power stroke (ie both valves closed)

Measure accurately fluid entered into cylinder through plug hole

Then put another cylinder on TDC (compression stroke) both valves shut

Again fill up accurately with measured fluid

This will give you sufficient figures to work out CR without stripping what is a perfectly good running engine

Never tried this but the theory should work !

nor the fact all head chambers vary in size, plus the fact pistons are machined to create the desired CR (usually)

But the liquid will probably pass by the rings.??..
