Default Black top zetec turbo???

how comes people do ever use the black top zetec 2ltr as a base for a turbo conversion????? Surely they have got to be improved in some way over the silver top ones???? does anyone know what the differences is??

One of the reasons is that the black tops have a completly different engine mount to the silver top zetecs (which have a mount similar to a normal RS Turbo mount).

I believe there are other reasons why, although i do know that its being done by people at the moment and im sure its probably already been done but not sure who might have got one!

The bottom end on the silver tops are rumoured to be stronger and the the black top heads have a certain advantage that you need for a higher power ZT

I know of a couple of Blacktop Zetec Turbo builds & I myself have one built ready to be installed.

Here's a decent link for you.....it pretty much explains the main differences.

Default black/silver tops

as 1 person has said the bottom ends abit stronger, main reason is the pistons in the silver tops are thicker than the black tops. to lower the compression ratio they have to be skimmed black 1s no good mate building my own 2.0ltr and a mates 1.8ltr zvh both silver tops. hope this helps you.

ive heard that the later (black top) has a much better head though, and is much quieter??????????pston thickness would not be an issue, cos i will be using a de-comp plate to lower the compression.I will still be useing proper forged jobbies though.

I'm running a black top Zetec Turbo - it came out of a 2.0 Focus and has been modified to take Arrow Rods and JE Pistons - stage 2 head and a few other bits and bobs and we're seeing 300+ bhp

why do you need a decomp plate if your using propper pistons?

surely decent propper pistons in the 1st place will not need a decomp plate

check parts for sale. selling my zetec turbo engine

wht i meant was, if i was using the eagle rods with JE forged pistons i would need a de comp plate as they run a compression ratio of 9.1!!!!!BETTER TO USE DE COMP PLATE THAN SKIM MEAL OFF THE PISTONS
the reason i want these is cos they are proper cheap in the states and are good quality.(plenty good enough for me) and for the price of the rods and pistons over there, you couldnt even buy the rods alone over here Why spend loads of money when you dont have to??? the money i save there can go into HEADWORK and maybe an exhaust cam????

Big wil 85, what sort of boost you running mate??? gearbox etc??
who did the work,or did you do it??

rightstuff Did all the work myself - its not finished yet, but the engine has run before and made over 300bhp at just over 1 bar.

I'm using a Focus RS box and its all had to be fabbed into my series 2 shell. Done the majority of mechanical work myself but left the fabrication work to the guy who's spraying my shell

DE COMP PLATES (copper ones) DONT FAIL MATE. several people have told me that the plate is more than likely STRONGER than the block itself mate. YOUR pistons would cost around £500 - £600 alone, Eagle rods & JE pistons UNDER £500 for the LOT. I have been told the eagle rods have been known to run 600+bhp WITHOUT fail. JE pistons a a reputable name.THESE ARE FAR FROM POOR PRODUCTS. This is why people try to sell built zetec turbo engines for so much £... its because it cost them ££££ to build it!!!!! There is no need to spend so much money. You can buy STEEL CRANKS over there for $589 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
IMPORTING ZETEC PRODUCTS IS THE WAY FORWARD.

Have pistons specd for you dont be dictated too as to what compression ratio you need to run.

Im using JE's with standard length Pauter rods giving a compression of 7.*:1.

Only on a T3 at the mo but with WRC rods low comp pistons 300+ will be a piece of piss! Dont know what power at the minute, intended to go T34 but mortgage is looming!

Ian Howell build, SCS dynod, Ahmed mapping on Pectel T2. Very quick!
