Heated front screen
Hi,
Hope somebody can help. Need to know the following:-
What current does a heated front screen draw?
Are there 2 relays on a standard set up?
Is there a timer in the system on a standard set up?
Are there any recommendations as to how long the screen should be left on?
How long does it normally take to clear a screen that is misted up on the inside?
Reason for asking is had to put a new screen in a rally car following a re-shell and wiring that is in car is 1 relay (40A) with a + feed then splitting and going to wires on either side of the screen. This set up gets quite hot around the relay plug, and think need to have a separate relay feeding each side, but just need a bit more info before starting even more work.
Alas no heater so this item fairly vital, as found out last Saturday.
Thanx.

Should be two relays, one for each side of the screen. I think from memory its at least a 20 A fuse protecting the circuit as well.
Don't think theres a timer circuit but I could be wrong

i believe that it's one single relay with in built timer. as you've found, the heating element is split into 2 halfs which a supply each side near the bottom corners.
i can't remember 100% on the relay, but i am 100% sure that it has a timer.

there are 2 relays
one if the timer
the other is the engine running one
not too sure about the fuse but i think it's more likely to be a 30 than a 20
i've got a loom at home i'll see if i can dig out when i get back to give you some proper answers
and the reason it's split driver/passenger is that even thoguh they have the same current going through them, because the drivers side is less, there is more going through and it heats up quicker
does that make sense?
should do

Thanks to all for the info, have wired each side of the screen to a separate relay, with no timer. Will just have to remember to switch off after use!! Also found you might need to check the location of wires coming from the screen, looks as though they can get trapped by the bonet hinge - used a dab of silicone to keep out of the way.
For relays used a 40A one from the banks of those at bottom LHS footwell area, behind glove box.
When it came down to it, didn't need to use the damn thing, sunny all day, which was good for the marshals.
Roy.
