I will always plum for the bike rather than the the running, purely because it is low impact on the knees and joints (as long as you have the saddle at the right height, e.g. knee should be slightly bent when at the bottom of the stroke)

They are two different exercises and the bike is supporting your weight where as with running you are picking yourself up each time you stride.

See my response on cardio vs weights as with a lot of cardio you can end up buring muscle and losing size, but if your goal is general fitness then I think you will achieve that happy medium using both running/riding and weights.

Anyhow, why not use both running and riding just so you don't go stale. Any form of variety on this sport helps keep you sane and motivated.
