Default Would you drink it?

I've just found an old 5kg tub of protein powder in my utility room. Only problem is it went out of date in May 2005

Sod it, its only powder, whats the worst that could happen?

Best Before.

I made a shake up with it yesterday and had a few sips. It seemed fine, just seperated in the milk after being sat for a while. Mind you it was only cheap stuff anyhow so would probably do this if in date. A quick shake and its fine again.

best by date dosn;t mean it will be bad for you, just means its best before that date, but could quite safely be consumed after that date. is the use by dates that are important.

Its made from milk yes but its been fairly well treated since it was that stage, not quite the same as having a carton in the fridge out of date by 3 years. Its pure isolate so stripped of fat etc and ionised. I know the dates are there for a reason but thats generally to safeguard makers and good will be OK long after that date. Its only powder, how badly can it go off? or what germs can form on it?? Genuine questions as I just dont know.

For the sake of a few quid its going in the bin anyhow.
