Shin Splints Help !!
Hi guys not posted in here before but reading the threads a couple of months ago got me really motivated.
About 2 1/2 years ago my mrs gave birth to our first little girl, at the time i was working shifts which included nights, i packed in the gym and up till recently i was blaming it on not having the time, i have now woken up and realised its down to me not making the time. My mrs has just not long had our second (and last!!) little girl and she is on paternity leave form work now, this now leaves me with evenings free as she usually worked evenings.
Anyway ive been back in the gym for about 2 months and i am loving every second, ive lost 4Kg so far and i am starting to get stronger but i think i have shin splints, this is a right basterd as i was really making progress on the treadmill and was planning of cutting down the cardio and just doing the treadmill and upping my weight training.
Is there anyway surefire way of getting rid of them or am i confined to the xtrainer forever??
Thanks Mike

Hi mate, i had shin splints when i was in the forces, which were caused by me having to run with 80lb packs on... It could be just your legs getting used to running again. It will go, wear good trainers helps alot.
Was it caused by road running or tread mill? If its on the tread mill, i dont think it will be shin splints.

It has happened on the treadmill, i have a decent pair of adidas bounce trainers.
The woman at the gym thinks it is but i sometimes found myself questionning her knowledge on appointments so not sure , i know nothing about shin splints but the pain is more of an ache on the inside of my shin bone and it is tender to the touch in one small place, it has gone for now but i have only been on the bike and rower for the last 7 days, tomorrow im going to warm up on the bike then try a gentle run, i will let you all know.
Cheers

I had them years and years ago from road running. The advice the doctor gave to me was to stretch them by doing calf raises on a doorstep or stairs. Really let your body weight push your toes upwards when doing the downward part i.e. toes up, heels down while pivoting on the balls of your feet.

Cheers for the info.
Went to the gym lastnight, my usual cardio is 1000m rower in the fastest time (usually 3min 50secs), 10 min bike on cross country setting trying for furthest distance (usually 3.7km) then 3km on the treadmill trying for best time without falling off!!!!!!, today i did the bike and rower but only did 1.5k quick paced walk on the treadmill and all was fine.
I will go for 2k the next time and then 2.5k and so on increasing pace as i go and break back into gently and hopefully get back to 3k run then i will drop the other cardio and step up the weight work. This routine is not the maddest but so far as above i have lost 4kg and am really happy with the results, im also feeling alot fitter and i am evan considering quitting smoking as i can fell this hindering my fitness.
Thanks
Mike
