Default Just ordered some new kit for the home Gym...

As i dont have access to a bar at teh gym i use, i have always done my benching at home, on this trusty York kit i bought a couple of years ago:

But its getting a littleunstable now when im benching heavy weights, not entirely helped by my 17stone frame! The base i am lying on starts to bend and wobble from side to side... very unerving when i dont have access to a spotter, so ive ordered these...

So now i can hopefully squat at home too!
Dont know why i have told you that, but i am excited. lol

Sure looks it...

I am hopeing i can assemble and position it in such a way as i can use it for easy benching as well as squating. Dont really see a problem but you never can tell until you have actually tried it i guess.

Fingers crossed.

I think it's the male instinct coming through. Also - it helps when working on cars

Surely the size of your arms restricts you from doing most things lol...Yeah i understand the male instinct but being big isnt everything? Why not box or something? Why make yourself huge? lol sorry curious moment

I dunno. I do it for one reason - to become the best Rugby player I can be - I'm not one to tone or define. I just want the strength. If becoming huge comes with it then whatever.

Well, for me there are various reasons. First of all i want to be stronger than i am. I had started feeling weak and low, so the training has improved that massively. Secondly, i have always wanted to be more muscular and stronger than i am. Ive no interest whatesoever in being the size of Coleman or Cutler, i just want to be a decent strong size.

Most boxers do a lot of resistance training as well as their normal skills and cardio workouts. Lets face it, boxers are hardly skinny little weaklings are they?

You could always pop a couple of cushions on the bench when you're not using it and tell Nicole it's the latest fashion sofa from Japan or something.

Seriously though, I've been having a good read in here these past couple of days and have to say you guys are an inspiration and great work to all of you that have improved so much over the months.

After reading your thread in GD about how you gave up caffeine Stu, it gave me the kick I needed to do the same. I was a big cola drinker (upto 10 2 litre bottles a week) and I knew it wasn't good for me - But I'm pleased to say that apart from the odd splash in my vodka at the weekends - I haven't been buying or drinking it for the past 3 weeks. I've switched to water.

I feel so much better already and it prompted me to change my diet too.

I'm not into body building - but I do want to improve my health and fitness and get toned up. So I've been having a look around for some equipment for that. After reading through this forum - I'm even more geared up for it now.

Sorry, waffled on a bit

Ive just realised my York bar is unlikely to be 6ft long so wont actually work with a bloody squat rack. Where teh hell do i buy a 6-7ft barbell?

Well pleased you have found improvements in life without Caffeine Darren, the bloody stuff has zero positive attributes yet lots of negatives!!

Get yourself down the Gym next mate, soon find yourself feeling good in teh morning.

Its a funny thing, its like tattoos, once you have one....etc.....once you start to see your self grow you just think i can get a bit bigger here and a bit more there and so on....
You get hooked on the whole lifestyle....the Gym the food the training techs social life at the gym and so on....

Cutler is a great example of someone who probably has quite serious restriction in his arms!!

I wonder if he can wipe his own arse? My boxer pal really struggles!

On a more positive note, i found a decent 6Ft standard bar for Ł25 delivered on e-bay, so all is well again, karma has been restored.

I am a boxer...and i do on my own behalf do resistance training at the gym. But we can't put weight on and grow fucking huge, just toned and fast. To be big aint you gotta have protein shakes etc?

If you want to look like arnold bloody scwarznegger then yes you have to take all sorts of crap.

But you can still get really strong with just a decent diet without any artificial crap ( i don't believe in suppliments).

You are likely doing whats known as circuit training. Basically lifting weights as a toning and fitness exersize instead of a growth exersize. Anyone can grow bigger, just requires the right technique and food. You do NOT have to take supllements, they Whey protein is simply used as its hard to eat enough protein in a busy work schedule. When protein is 100% natural, fast and convenient.

Theres 82kg with the bar, not a lot at all by some standards, and a huge amount by others, but the weight is not what matters, what matters is your happy with the improvements that YOU make to yourself.

See this topic where we i have commented on a similar subject.

In 8 month youve double your benching weight to me thats some going and can't even imagine myself being able to do that. Saying that,i always feel that way when i first start training, then a few months down the road you start taking to it and it does eventually happen. How often do you increase weight Stu? Is there a time period or do you go on how you feel?

Not sure if I've read you post right mate but I think your saying that you don't normally bench as you mainly work out your shoulders and chest?

If so benching is an exercise for the chest. Get it in your routine.

I cant find a bench wide enough to take my wide back/frame

I had one exactly the same as yours Stu, but had to get rid of it because the main pad support was too narrow and i kept slipping off the side

and when lifting weights above you when lying down (bench press etc) the last thing you want is to slip/fall off to one side

i havent tried in any gyms, i assume they are all standard width

my cousin had the same problem, he was a big lad, but if you spread the bench you also move the support posts, so you are stuck with trying to get your back on the bench to support yourself and your arms spaced wide enough to get a decent grip

being a diesel fitter he had plenty of heavy metal to weld up to make wat he wanted, but it does become a compromise

i suppose this is part of the reason so many places have multi gyms and wieghts machines rather than free wieghts

me personannly can't lift too much because my shoulders joints are a bit crap, but i wouldn't mind being bigger, it's nice to be physically fit and be able to tighten and lossen bolts and nuts with weedy spanners rather than trying to put in 3 foot long breaker bars to undo that little nut you can't get to

The olympic bench down my gym is tapered. Its about the same width as Stu's at its thinnest and double that at the top where your back goes!
